Please help. Can someone who is unable to stand or sit for prolonged periods, but needs to alternate between the two positions, and who cannot lift more than 10 pounds work as an Elementary school teacher ? (specifically 3rd grade).

Absolutely. Just organize your class activities and lesson plans to alternate between the two positions. Kids can be extremely kind and helpful, especially in helping you carry heavy things (make sure you involve the girls in that as much as the boys). Have one or two rolling posture chairs available in the classroom so you can sit and move around at the same time. For outdoor activities such as PE, you can team with other teachers. The school is required to offer you special accommodations. A colleague of mine who couldn't stand or walk at all taught very successfully from a motorized power chair (scooter), including recess supervisory yard duty. Go for it!

Yes, sure. It would probably be easier to teach elementary school with this issue than many other jobs. You're in control of the classroom so you can sit or stand whenever you want. Even if your students are taking a test, you can circulate around the room.

Yes. And it would be illegal for a school district to not hire that person for that reason. It would be considered discrimination.
