Some truth in that. Terrorism is a tactic and it exists as long as there are people that hate you enough to want to commit it. The way you defeat terrorism is by creating an environment where they no longer want to attack you. You don't correct a defiant child by beating the defiance out of him, that just makes him more defiant. You find out the cause of the defiance and try to correct it.
Going after terrorists with an army sworn "to defeat" them only creates more of them.

Ever read Slaughterhouse 5? Remember the quote at the begining, something along the lines of trying to stop war being like trying to stop an iceberg. Does that mean we dont try? In asking them to lay down and forget the War on Terror youre also asking us to lay down and end the fight for world peace.
Just because you cant finish something doesnt mean you cant make progress. It doesnt mean you cant strive to fail in the best way possible.
Ever watch Family Guy? Remember the Civil Rights board game where Peter asks Cleveland if anyone ever wins? Cleveland says you never win, you just do a little better each time. Thats another fight that will probably never be won. Racism will not dissappear as long as there are races, but we can make things a little better all the time. Should we do that, or should we just give up because we cant erase racism?

Better is the quote from some general who said that having a war on terrorism is like having a war on flanking maneuvers.
But overall, David Cross is pretty insightful.

the thing is that they're actually having a war this time. This isn't like having extra police or trying to be a better person, this is rockets and missiles. If you actually wanted to stop terrorism, I imagine you would be doing something completely different. For example would rolling tanks down American streets bring order and stop crime or would it create revolution and anarchy. This is the story that has been told before. The tighter your grip the more star systems will fall through your fingers.

I think it should be more like, "We can't win a war against crime, it's like having a war against terrorism".
Should we just ignore it?

The fact that you cannot "Win" a war on terror doesn't mean that you shouldn't fight it....
(I'm actually against the war in iraq... I have been from the beginning.... Because it never had anything to do with "Terrorism")
But, I do strongly feel that terrorist groups deserve to be hunted down. We (as a planet of humans) need to hunt them down and kill them (or re-educate them) before they grow into nuclear powers.
As a military historian, I can tell you that what we are undergoing right now is a doctrinal shift. "Terror tactics" cannot be allowed to become "the norm". If they do, then we will lose our ability to do good in the world. (And we will be responsible for destroying humanity )

Sadly it is probably correct. It is nearly impossible to stop every individual in the world from using violence to advance their agenda, especially when they target innocents.
This is not the same as saying we shouldn't try, we just shouldn't expect to be completely successful. This is a tough concept. Kind of like the war on poverty. We should and need to fight it but to take the steps necessary to eliminate poverty we have to dictate how each person will live their life. Doesn't seem to work in our society.

You also can't win a "War on Drugs". Terms like the "War on Terror" and "War on Drugs" are just rhetoric that's used to justify government exercises in futility.
