When you are sleeping your body is still aware of the sounds going on around it, but your mind usually turns them into something else in your dreams.

You know, from Psych 101, the brain has different parts, the Id, the Ego, and the Super Ego. Well, that is too much for me; just use "conscious" and "sub-conconsious" mind. When we sleep, our conscious mind is resting; it is doing all that computer stuff, similar to defragmentation, disc clean up, etc. That is part of the function of dreaming; to organize all those thoughts and what happened thoughout the day.
One's sub-conscious is still working: it hears, it feels, all that good stuff, it just does not see.
When sleeping, depending upon just what stage of sleep a person is in, and someone knocks upon the door, the subconsious incorporates it into the dream. This is quite common, nothing to be concerned about. But, it is good to train the brain to learn what it actually is and thus be able to alert your conscious mind to happenings (very useful if you hear a smoke detector go off!)
