They are both safe. It is just a matter of preference. I prefer tampons, because I worry about leaks and I feel like everyone can 'smell' me when I use pads.

TSS isn't a real danger. It was a problem in the 70's and 80's, but there was a major overhaul of the system and that is no longer the case. There was one major manufacturer that had a big problem with TSS, but they went out of business. The materials used are slightly different, too. In the US in 1997 (the last records), only five confirmed menstrual-related TSS cases were reported. As long as you use the tampon appropriate for your flow and you change it regularly (every 4-8 hours), you will be fine.

technically most people would say that maxi pads are safer because when using tampons you run a small risk of toxic shock syndrome...so if you wore a pad you would completely rule out that risk completely...i think it just goes by your personal beleifs and preferances though.

You at risk for TSS with tampons, but if you change the size of your tampon with your menstrual flow and change the tampon frequently, you shouldn't have a problem. But out of the 2 of them Maxi's are safer. I prefer tampons.

I can't believe there are actually women in here telling you that tampons are safer just because they don't leak.

LOL Good Lord!

You cannot get sick from a pad, but you can from a tampon. TSS is rare, but it does happen and it is still a risk. You can't get that from pads. But it's your personal choice.

Safer to your health, pads. They don't have to be thick maxi pads. The thinner ones are adequate most days, and neither size has any health risks.

Tampons have been connected to toxic shock syndrome.
