In the year of our lord 2007 the United States faces a challenge we remain reluctant to recognising in full and opportunities we fail to recognize at all. We are the greatest -and most virtuous- power in history. For now our existence is not at stake, although the lives of our citizens, the degree of our freedom and the well-being of our allies are at risk. There is no doubt that we will survive and triumph. But the decisions we make will determine the costs our enemies extract along the way. And we DO have enemies, old and new, mercilles and uncompromising, who hate us for our success, our freedom, and our power, as well as for the global transformations we inspire.
The United States is cast in the role of a doctor during a plague. No matter how hopless the situation may seem, the crisis demands our courage and perseverence. The risks we take are the only hope for avoiding a greater disaster for humanity. Despite the errors we have made in the middle east, the vitriol spit in our direction by the regions inhabitants isn't really aboutr us, its about them. The middle east has grown so inhumane and weak that it craves a "great satan" to explain away its ineptitude. The greatest power on earth will have to do. Indeed the middle east remains the world's sick civilization. Because of our virtuous efforts, Iraq may become the Middle Easts beacon of liberty. Or it may end as another Arab pyre. The Iraqi's, not us, will determine their ultimate fate. Their choices will shape a civilizations future.
Of course there is much more to the world than the struggling Muslim heartlands. Europe is in ther midst of an identity crisis of its own, haunted by a brutal past and insulted by Americas upstart success. The old powers are still far from forgiving us for supplanting them in the stretigic arena - or for our generosity toward them in the last century. Had we only been as cruel as europeans themselves in the wake of the twentieth century's great wars, we would be much better liked. The primary intellectual goal of Western european societies for the past half century has been to prove that the United States is as cruel and corrupt as they themselves have been. When your heritage is genocide, wars of agression, or cowardly surrender, the record of the United States can be hard to bear. The old powers cannot avoid measuring themselves against us, but the disparities they discover are so great that europes moral delinquents cannot resist comforting themselves with lies about our naivete, our purported clumsiness, our violence and our crudity ( without pausing to ask themselves how such pathetic mediocrities could have built the richest, most powerful, most desirable and exemplary society in history). Indeed when it comes to self examination, the heartlands of Europe are simply the middle east lite.
Yet Europe is likely to be good for a number of surprises-surprising not the least to Europeans themselves. With our short historical memory (one American quality Germans welcome), we thoughtlessly accept that, since much of Europe appears to be passive, so it shall remain. But no continent has exported as much misery and slaughter as Europe has done, and chances are better than fair that Europe is simply catching its breath after the calamities it inflicted upon itself in the last century.
We last saw widesperad pacifism just before 1914 and again during that half time break in that great European civil war that lasted until 1945 (or 1991 east of the Elbe).
Europes current round of playing pacifist dress up was enabled by Americas protection during the Cold War. We allowed our European wards to get away with a minimum number of chores. The United States did (and still does) the dirty work, seconded by our direct ancestor Britian. Even NATO merely obscured how little was asked of Europe. For almost a century the work of freedom and global security has been handeled the great Anglolateral alliance born of a struggle against tyranny of Continental European philosophies hatched on the Rhine and Danube. Our struggle continues today - against fanaticism and terror.
It is unlilkely that Europe's present pacifism will last. Indeed, there are many different Europe's. The new Europe in the east understands that freedom has a price and cannot be purchased with appeasment. Southern Europe is undergoing a complex second renaissance. The United Kingdom, for all its grump resentment of the United States, will always align with us in a severe crisis: Our mutual values are far closer than any Briton shares with France or Germany. Anglo-American sparing can be vicious, but outsiders fail to grasp that its a family feud. And the family closes ranks to outsiders. France and Germany are Europes starkest problems (They are also vehemently anti-American). They wish to lead but lack the vision, power and generosity required to build enduring alliances. Germany and France are sick inside, having gobbled up immigrant populations they are unwilling and unable to digest. For all their fabulous critisism of American society ( where their calanders stop at around 1954), th extent of racism and bigotry in Continental Europe rivals that of a long gone American South and threatens to exceed it.
Meanwhile, "Old Europe" is rapidly becoming, truly, old Europe. With aging populations, bankrupt retirment systems, arthritic economies, educational stagnation and punitive taxation, it appears at first glance that the continent is headed for senility, for conditions under which its dwindling youth will neither be able to man the continents already enfeebled militaries nor support the overhang of the elderly.
Dont bet on a weak, pacifist Europe doing nothing as the immigrant time bombs with explode, while demographic pressures stress its outer borders. Behind all the American scolding and empty swagger Europe is uncertain of its future. And afraid. And when Europe is uncertain and afraid, its impoverished immigrants and neighbors had better start worrying.
The most laughable preictions of the the past two centuries have been those forecasting the decline of the West (especially the US). The formal empires may be gone, but the Anglolateral world enjoys power, wealth and freedom without precedent, while continental Euope has never lived so safely or so well as under the Pax Americana. The last half century has been the most prosperous and peacful in European history and Europeans dont want the party to end. But its long past midnight. Europe can no longer afford the lavish social welfare systems it constructed over the decades while America paid the strategic bills without demur.
The trouble with Europe is of course, its dark side. If its racist populations feel sufficiently threatend by its Muslim millions within their divided societies and by terror exported from the islamic heartlands, Europe my respon with a cruelty unimaginable to us today. Afterall, Europe is the continent that mastered ethnic cleansing and genocide after a thousand years of practice. We Americans my find ourselves in the unexpected position of confronting the Europe of tomorrow as we try to restrain its barbarities toward Muslims.
This should be the true American century where we move atlast beyond the poisonous European divisions of the world and help create a genuine"new world order" - although not one based upon the murderous nonsense of the left.
America is the most revolutionary state and culture in history. Now its our turn to export revolution.
Scince the end of the Cold War every conflict in which the United States has been involved has been to some degree a legacy of Europes colonial era - including the liberation of that frankenstein's monster of a country Iraq. We are cleaning up the messes left by Paris, Berlin and even London, while Europeans chide us self-righteously. We need to lead the world away from continental Europes cynical approach to human rights, which consists of theatrically mourning the dead but doing nothing to protect those still alive and threatend. Weakness never saved a human life!
In an age of global pessimism and fear, Americans still believe that change is not only possible, but likely to be good. Weather we wish it or not, we lead humanity. At times we will have to lead with bayonets, but, more often, we will lead through our ideas. If remain wise and just, as well as resolute, ever more of our fellow human beings will follow willingly.
And never forget, America is the worlds essentail force for good. No amount of fashionable anti-Americanism will ever change that.

1) I don't hate America, nor do I love it. Personally I don't think America is the "Greatest country on Earth", not even close. America is supposed to be compassionate. Just look at some of the relief work America has done in other countries, yet there are millions of people in the US who can't afford to go to a darn doctor. There is no real job stability in the US. You can get fired at any time for any reason, or no reason. Most other developed countries you get a job contract which protects you against this sort of thing. Cars in America get 2/3 less gas mileage than their European cars...same brand, same model...it is disgusting. Large drug companies make deals with other countries to provide medication dirt cheap, yet here, where a lot of it is made, we pay through the teeth. I could keep going, but I think you get my drift. And before any of you say if I don't like it here, I should leave. Well my family is leaving in about 6 months time. 2) Opinions are like belly buttons. Everyone has one. Doesn't bother me one way or another what someone else thinks and feels about America. Belle

Try reading World History; not American History.
I don't think anyone really hates America, purely what it stands for.
A diplomatic mission from the USA is generally preceeded by the arrival of an Aircraft Carrier and two Nuclear Submarines; just enough to make a mess of any country, certainly ruin its total infastructure.
I know I am a bit picky, but did you know that American Military are busily killing British Soldiers without any acknowledgement (Friendly Fire).
The rest of the world is generally paying massive oil taxes (including poor countries) just so that Americans can drive proudly around in Gas Guzzlers with petrol at approximately a sixth of the price that others pay.
When Dictators do kill their own people, America does stand back (remember the even handed approach in the Falklands War); (do you know where the Falklands are?).
Most of what is happening in the Middle East would not be happening now if America had not dabbled and forced Britain out of Suez.(do you know where Suez is?)
Sorry to be irritating about your knowledge of Geography, but it is well published in American Documents that at least 60% of Americans have no idea where other places are in the world; an even greater percentage know virtually nothing of world history.
No!, not hated; more Globally misunderstood through American ignorance.

Most people do not hate America per se - I've never met an American I haven't got on with and think it is a great nation.
Unfortunately, there is a certain degree of ignorance spouted on this site from all nationalities. The guy called savagenationarmydude for instance. Did America really invent the TV (Scottish) ? Or the computer (many nations evolved it) ? First powered flight I'll give you but not possible without the internal combustion engine (German) or jet engine (British). It's that kind of ill informed stupidity that causes many people problems and gives people a certain perception about Americans.
Also, per head of population or by percentage of GDP, your foreign aid contributions aren't that great. Sorry, but it's true.
Anyway, lots of people still love you - don't get paranoid.

Your guess is wrong
And if you truly beleive that America is "hated" because it helps other countries out them you are very very deluded!!
Try thinking about American foreign policy.
As for "freedom" the trouble is that you Yanks think you invented it and that your model of "freedom" is the only valid one. So if a country has a different method of government to you (ie the UK having Royals or a country which is run under religious rather than secular law) then they are "wrong" and need "educating".
Thats so arrogant!!! This has more to do with why the US is hated than foreign aid!
I also feel Americans aere very hypocritical to make all this fuss about "War on Terror" when they funded the IRA for the longest time. Is it only "terrorism" when it happens to you?

You are all wrong.People the world over do not hate America for doleing out billions of dollars in help. But their INTENTIONS behind such help.To be frank enough,we all love US,for its freedom, culture, prosperity, equality and what not.But some of its policies,( which generally doesnt imply all americans) followed are quite reprehensible. Its double standards, is solely responsible for generating hatred world wide.Be impartial and think. What right US have,in being present in iraq ? Who gave US, the moral right to police the world ? What made US intervene in Vietnam ? The list is endless and could go on and on and on....Agreed that, terrorists doing of 9/11 is against US's interest and it can take all such measures to eliminate this threat. Then why does US shout hoarse and issue threats, when India wanted to persue the same policy in Pakistan. On the one hand it actively supports Isreal, but shows a altogether different face,in comparison to India. US should not interfere in the guise of a UNIVERSAL SAVIOR in other countries affairs.Because US plays dirty,it is loathed by all.In case, you adopt a impartial attitude, you yourself will come to face with the truth.

America only comes running when there's oil in a country. Most of the help America gives is given because it's in Americas interest to do so. Have a look at why America has got involved in overseas conflicts over the last 50 years and if you are honest with your findings then you will change your tune.
Korea - Anti Communist
Vietnam - Anti Communist
Cuba - Anti Communist
Middle East - Oil reserves.
If America is so fantastic at helping with disasters or dictatorships what happened about the Contras. Why no involvement in the Anti Apartheid movement over the years in SA. Why no involvement in Zimbabwe. Why are 3/4 of the third world starving when your country is throwing away more food than it eats.

I think you need to read some books. People don't like America for millions of reasons, i will give you just a few.
1 Americans are mostly overweight
2 Americans only rush to war if it is their own interest. Your country doesn't do anything unless there is profit in it.
3 Americans cant shot for **** (friendly fire anyone)
4 Americans have destroyed a once vibrant and varied movie world into the crap blockbusters fest it is today.
5 Americans think they are the world ie world series baseball and things of that nature
6 Americans are generally speaking stupid.

I know you're being sarcastic but there's something to this. If you are nice to people who don't follow the rules, who make demands but don't give anything in return and so on you end up with a lot of dependant trouble makers. People do things they are in the habit of doing and they continue if they get away with it. They get away with taking from Americans and then bad mouthing them so they continue scapegoating us for their own miseries.
And yes we should stay out of their troubles and let them fix their own countries. We have people here that need help and problems here and people seem to think there's no money for it. But if we stopped helping other countries we'd have plenty for our own people and time to fix what's broken here.

I don't hate America. I think the USA is a great nation. I don't always agree with all of its governments policies or ways of thinking, but then I don't always agree with my own country's policies either. The USA is my favourite holiday destination, I love & admire many American people & I think the USA has a lot of great things to contribute to the world. I really don't feel hatred at all. Please don't think that we are all the same just because the minority write silly comments on here!

The fact that those dictatorships have loads of oil or other resources never come in to it? Grow up and read your history. I never saw an American rushing to help when my extremely poor country at the time got bulldozed by the Russians. And I can't see anyone doing anything about the state of human rights in China since they're a world power.
