http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEET
I saw a television program that showed all the different things thought to repel the mosquito. They tested all of them. The study and testing proved that nothing was effective except the products containing "DEET". The citronella candles, Avon, electronic devices were all ineffective.
Things like Cutter Outdoorsman 30% DEET, and Deep Woods Off proved to be the only effective repellents
The propane fueled mosquito traps worked well too. They put out CO2 which attracts the mosquito.

The first thing I would do is to look for breeding spots in the area. They only breed when the water is still/ no moving water.
Eliminate the source eliminate the mosquito.

If you are in the midwest, good luck, I dont think anything will work right now other than staying inside.
I have used Avon Skin So Soft which helps, and patchouli oil has worked in the past for me too. Other than that, spray that bug spray head to toe, dont wear light blue or gray, and try not to breathe (kidding - but thats how they find you!)

A few months back after the rainy season, we were plagued by skitters and I came across a little blurb in the AARP bulletin which we tried and it works. Mix 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water placed on the desk or balcony and for some reason it keeps them away. For personal protection, rub a dab or two of lavender oil on your wrists and elbows. Haven't been bitten yet!

Now there's this really strong citronella wrist/ankle band that can really keep mosquitoes away. I've tried once while I was in the jungle. Very useful. The wrist/ankle band is like velvet texture and only comes in orange colour.

I have heard that eating bananas helps. Im not sure why. Also AFTER you are bitten, rub onion on the bite. It will help relieve the itching. Sorry Im not sure of anything else that works, other than the traditional bug sprays and candles.

get the bug spray with the highest concentration of deet. Mosquitoes hate deet. It smells bad to us too, but it's way more bearable.

Just go to the place where the mosquitoes are bothering you and let them eat you up. The next day just go to the same place and they'll leave you alone. Trust me because i live where mosquitoes are. This happens alot so don't worry:)
