Conservative are considered to be on the right side of the political spectrum. Liberals are considered to be on the left side of the political spectrum.
The farthest left is communism. Moving to the right of that point is socialism, to the right of that is liberalism. In the middle of the spectrum are so-called moderates. To the right of that are conservatives, who prefer less government.

Picture the political spectrum as a line. The extreme left side of that line is pure anarchy, no government at all. The extreme right side of the line is totalitarianism. In America even our most extreme lefties and righties are somewhere toward the center. What we often consider an extremist in the US is no where near a true extremist in the world prospective. Sometimes that line becomes a circle where the anarchy of Communism, for example, becomes totalitarian as though it were Fascist or Nazi.
We have phases in American politics of approximately 20 years where one could compare it to a clock pendulum moving from left to right and back again. When the nation goes too far to the right the pendulum swings left and when it goes too far to the left it returns to the right. The overall action is keeping us in balance somewhere in the middle. The pendulum has been on the right for some time now and is moving more to the left and is about to hover slightly to the left of center. Eventually it will move further to the left and then back to the right again.

I don't know if the left/right dichotomy is still valid. Some people above have stated that the left stands is more liberal, the right more conservative and by definition coercive.
Anarchism is a left-wing ideology that stands for libertarianism, but any left-wing regime will have to be coercive. It will have to impose a tax regime, plan the economy, oversee education to pursude citizens to accept its ideology and alter social relations so that the state controls peoples' lives.
The term far-right conjures up images of fascism. But right-wing libertarians advocate a free market economy, individualism, choice and self sufficiency.

Left is liberal and right is conservative. The terms "left wing" and "right wing" were taken from the places the members of the National Assembly sat during the French Revolution.
