You are advised to take a pre-paid taxi from the airport to Mumbai. The nearest railway station is Andheri on the Western Rly. From there you can catch a local train to Ltt. Thane is farther on Mumbai=Pune line(CentralRailway)

Both are equidistant, if you are travelling by road to the airport from the station. However, there is less traffic if you are coming from Thane side. At the same time, there are shortcuts from LTT as well.
Also, if you go from Thane, you will cross the toll naka, where you will have to pay toll. Thane is actually another city.

I guess you want a larger vehicle. There a scattering of regular price taxi that are also larger, about the size of the old station wagon. You can book a larger vehicle from a desk inside the airport... from a standard Benz sedan to a 15 passenger van. Anything larger would need advance planning and booking. If you go out to the regular taxi line of waiting people, tell the dispatcher you want a large taxi and stand in line until you at the front and then stand there until a larger taxi comes in, about one in fifty that arrive. So you are in for some waiting in the heat with your luggage in line. But these square backed taxis cost same as the little ones. In all cases except a big truck, you can get what you want in or on the curb of the airport upon arrival.

Get Down at Vileparle, go to Mumbai Domestic Airport via Eastern side. For Lokmaniya Tilak Terminus - alight at Kurla Jn. Thane is faraway. Don't get down at Santacruz, which far from Airport. Actually International Airport is in Andheri (E), so alight at Andheri and get into a taxi go to Intl Airport which in Andheri Kurla Road. From Kurla also it is far. A right Cut that come in the AK road will dead end at the Intl Airport. Follow Signs. Also take a inter Terminal Airport Bus from Domestic Airport to reach Intl Airport, the Airport Bus will go via Runway to reach the Intl Airport.

Lokmanya Tilak Terminus better known as LLT/CST is a better option. I'm attaching a link to this answer, visit the web page and look for your convenience. LLT is shown as VT on the lower bottom of the page.
