They are a bit hard. You have to vacuum the snot out of them and they are notorious for hiding things like coins and small toys. I have a shag area rug and I hate it every time I have to vacuum it, but then I love it when it is done. Nothing feels better on bare feet. Therefore, if you don't mind vacuuming it often then go for it.

They require a bit more care than ordinary pile capeting would. You should vacuum regularly to make sure that the dirt doesn' settle deep into the carpet where it' nearly impossible to remove.
Spot cleaning shag rugs is fairly easy. Follow the directions for your cleaning agent. It may require a bit more blotting or leaving the solution on for a bit longer.
It is possible to steam clean shag carpets and have fantastic results. The key is not to let too much moisture remain in the rug. You want to be able to walk on it with socks after you've cleaned it and the socks shoud only be damp. (From experience.)
If you have allergies shag carpets will tend to hold more allergens than shorter pile rugs.

Hi gajjar c,
I did a little looking around on the Pottery Barn website and found the information below. I'm sure it won't be any harder to clean than any other wool rug, it just may take a little more work due to the extra surface area of a "shag" rug. Don't forget to use the highest setting on your vacuum sweeper. Hope this info is a help to you, good luck with your purchase.
Benson Shag Rug

8' wide x 10' long (96" wide x 120" long)
9’ wide x 12’ long (108” wide x 144” long)
Cut Pile: 1.25" high
Thickness: 1.75"
COMPOSITION & CONSTRUCTION
Woven of 100% New Zealand wool, and backed with a cotton canvas that is attached with latex adhesive. Bound with dyed-to-match 100% wool. Made in India.
CARE
Shedding of loose fibers may occur with rug's first use, but this will diminish over time. Do not pull, but cut any loose yarns with scissors. Vacuum rug regularly with a low-power vacuum, or shake it to prevent dust and crumbs from settling into the roots of the fibers. Avoid direct and continuous exposure to sunlight. Turn carpet around occasionally to equalize wear. Use rug protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid flattening the pile. To prevent slippage and color transference, as well as to reduce wear and extend the life of the rug, a rug pad is recommended (sold separately). Remove spills immediately. Blot liquid spills with a clean, undyed cloth by pressing firmly around the spill for maximum absorption. For hard-to-remove stains, consult a professional rug cleaner. Do not dry-clean. Pottery Barn can neither recommend any over-the-counter cleaning products, nor guarantee their efficacy. Store rug by rolling it front side out, wrapping it in a cloth for protection, and placing it in a dry, well-ventilated area. Do not fold rug, or store it in an airtight plastic bag.
FEATURES & BENEFITS
Woven with a combination of thick and thin yarns, this rug has all the soft and easy appeal of a shag rug. It is handwoven on a pit loom in India, is luxuriously soft underfoot and brings a contemporary and updated look to a living room or bedroom. It is made with 100% New Zealand wool, which is considered to be the best wool in the world. Made of soft and durable wool, this rug will be warm in winter and cool in summer; its cut pile gives it a velvety and plush texture that's easy to sink your feet info. We suggest our rug pads: standard (#4285623) and premium (#4590596).
