If you are an average joe then about 5 glasses, plus a glass or two of whatever else you like. If you do a bit of exercise try 6 glasses plus a glass of something else. But, if you work out several days a week, and do cardio I would recommend about 8-9 glasses a day 4-5 days a week, and then go down to 5-6 for the other days. You need to keep the body hydrated and cool. Also the water helps curb appetite and speed up your metabolism. Good Luck!

The old 'rule' was 2 litres or 6-8 glasses a day but current thinking seems to suggest for starters that it's 2 litres of LIQUID a day and even coffee would count as you retain some of it's water content even though it's a diuretic (makes you pee).
A good suggestion I'd say is if your lips feel a bit dry drink a glass or two maybe as I read somewhere that when your lips feel dry you're about 2% dehydrated. I do that mostly and it seems to work very well.
It's all about getting to know and listen to what your body is telling you not some white coated scientist or magazine article.

the old adage of drinking 7-8 glasses of water daily is under review at the present time as for some people this washes them out and yes you can drink too much water, listen to your own body and if you are thirsty then drink water, problem with today's society is that we have replaced water with other beverages. Also the water from your tap is often MUCH better than the stuff you buy in bottles. My advice is get a water filter for your tap and drink that instead of making companies rich for bottling tap water. Also the plastic bottles are filling up our land-fill sites so quickly.

It depends on what sort of climate you live in, whether you sweat a lot, how much exercise you do & all sorts of other factors. As a general rule drink 8 glasses of water per day, & you should never feel thirsty as this is a sign of dehydration.

The old rule was 6 to 8 bottles a day. New studies have shown that you recieve water also through foods you eat such as fruits and veggies. One should be able to stay well hydrated and healthy with 4 bottles a day if they also eat properly.

They say 8 but i can only drink around 5 on weekdays when I'm in the office. On days when I'm out in the sun or when I exercise, I drink more than that.

Hey! that's my 2nd grader son's lesson. "Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day".
For adults, 2-3 li /day, but if one normally drinks this amount, additional amount would be needed.
