Every one who pontificates about energy and matter should know the A to this Q, including ignorant me. Can anyone shed light on the matter? A link even?

Please try to be helpful. I didn't ask if there were other def'ns and if you feel there is one you consider more appropriate or more informative, pls state it? I'm really trying to get at the origin of the concept as we use it today in thermodynamics. No one at YA seems to know.
