Is there body odor? Maybe a strong accent that may limit conversation? A deformed body? Lack of good grooming? Dresses badly? Unfortunately, unless you ask him directly, "what is it about me do you think I should change?", you can only guess. It isn't a bad thing to want to change your look, etc. My wife recently had her hair done from long to short, very modern. It works (at $140 a pop it better) Than a slight wardrobe change to go with the hair, etc. So stop wondering and push forward. I am sure you will find many other women in a similar situation that will give you all the moral support you could want. Take a more "positive " approach towards this goal and you may find a more independent and confident you.

I would say just the way he acts. Does not invite you to events or to hang out with other friends. Why not talk to him and see if there is something wrong.
