Unless the technology has changed in the past few years, car batteries are lead-acid. This means that inorder to genereate electricity it must have sulfuric acid to react with the lead plates in the batteery to create electricity. I've heard that cars that are known as hybrids have a different type of battery. Again, I'm talking about technology that has been around of more years than I've been alive. I'm 71

Are you speaking of a liquid on top the battery or corrosion around the posts? Liquid could mean the battery has a leak. Corrosion happens a lot. Just take a wire brush and clean it off. They also make a coating that can be applied after cleaning to reduce build-up.

this is a normal condition, mix a little baking soda with water.poor in on the acid, this will naturalize the acid, then if you have a small wire brush and brush off it off, then pour plain water on it to naturalize the baking soda. then put a light coating of grease on the battery terminals
