I recently had a new flat mate move into my rented place (my old one wanted to move home). I met him a few times and turns out he knows lots of my friends etc, we got on great, so felt happy about him moving in.
Since he has been living there we have got on really well and I feel really comfortable with him being there - it's like we have known each other for ages.
However, at the weekend, someone let slip that he does something he shouldn't. I was a little shocked, but at first thought I would turn a blind eye. Talking to some mates at work though, I have realised that if anything comes back on him - I'm probably likely to get in trouble too aren't I?
Awkward one - what to do for the best?

It isn't just a rumour - it is ture. We have spoken about it, but being a little dumb that day, didn't think of what effect it may have on me and just kind of got on with it. Now it's sunk in I have realised it could back fire on me!

Are we talking Criminal or anti-social behaviour here? If you get on as well as you say you do with your flat-mate, then ask him about the rumour. After all, just because someone 'let slip' doesn't make it true, does it?
If he IS doing something criminal, then you would be well advised to find a new flatmate, as you may well find yourself in a difficult situation. You could be charged as an accessory and/or find yourself in breach of your tenancy agreement, which would result in you being made homeless. The 'ostrich' approach - ie. Head in the Sand - is no defence.

Asking him is probably the best thing - if he is bringing/doing something illegal in the flat, then you need to make him aware that you aren't comfortable - if its drugs/stolen goods etc, chances are you colud be tarred with the same brush.

You need to see if you can come to an agreement, and hopefully that will be the end of it.

If he does not respect your wishes, go to your landlord - it is opening up a whole can of worms, but you should feel safe and comfortable in your own home.

Last gasp - move out.

If what he does is against the law, then yes you could be in trouble also. And if you know that he is breaking the law you can not claim to be innocent. it is called aiding and abbetting a crime. Sit down with him and discuss it with him privately. If it is true ask him to move out and get another flatmate. If he refuses, you may have to move out and get a different place yourself or turn him in to the athorities(if it is serious enough).

You'll be liable if "whatever it is he's doing" is inside your home, or if he's doing it from your home. If he keeps his businesses strictly outside the house, then I think it will probably be his mess to deal with. Find out, don't play blind or deaf or mute, because it is your life/freedom/peace of mind that are in play here. It's better to blush for 5 minutes, than to regret it all your life (or something like that). Hope it helps.

it really depends on what he has done but yes if it was something illegal and now that you know he is a criminal you can be charged for hiding him or you can even be charged in assisting in the crime ( like someone who drives the gettaway car lol) Depending on how bad it was you should probably get him out of there before you get into trouble yourself

All relay depends on what he is doing. If it puts you in a bad situation then speak to him. Say that you have heard things and need it sorted or he is out. Give him the chance to say his side.

It can be tricky.

If its drugs, and he gets caught you will not get into trouble, unless he says you were somehow involved.

Generally, if you're name is on the lease, you must tell him to stop as it is your place. If he still does it, throw him out.
