Or is Lloyd Carr really so out of it that they will probably fall farther?

I just ask because a lot of people over the weekend seemed to think they would not go below 15.

Funny you say 15 because I thought that they would go to 15 after the loss. It's obvious the team needed a warm up game to see where improvements are needed. This will be a unfortunate wake up call and I feel will either drive the team to win out the season or fall apart. All depends on coaching and how the players respond. Michigan seems to not prepare enough often for the first game of the season. Let's hope that this causes them to correct their poor planning for future seasons. I never cared for scheduling weak teams for the first game anyways. They should play someone ranked or atleast in the same division.

I think because of the recent success of small D-1 schools and of course the Michigan loss that the pollsters are becoming less forgiving than they have in the past. Just look at this weeks poll Texas had a bad showing and dropped 3 spots Cal had a win over a top 15 team and barely moved at all. This why I think they should not rank teams until the second or third week

It just shows how weak that conference is as a whole. There are some good teams in Penn St., Ohio St and Wisconsin, but the only really good team that has any chance for the National title is Wisconsin. Not surprised at all, what was surprising is that they were ranked that high to start with. It is all media hype, tradition and larger schools. The National Champion will be from either the Pac 10 (USC or Cal) or the SEC (Florida, LSU, Auburn, Georgia, or Arkansas).

Yeah I think it's a little extreme and it really shows how little respect people give Appalachian State.

Honestly though anyone who doesn't think they're still one of the top 25 teams in the country either hates Michigan or is delusional

It was the first game of the season and Michigan thought they could just go out there and play halfway decent and get a win. But for Appalachian State it was maybe the biggest game they ever played and they played it like a championship game whereas Michigan played like it was just an easy W

Absolutely not, they lost to a team that NO ONE had even heard of, and if you had to guess, most thought was somewhere in West Virginia, but turned out to be some small town called Boone, NC. If they get on a hot streak, they can climb back into the top 25, but even if every other ranked school lost once, they still wouldn't go to the Championship game because of who they lost to.

That's my 2 for 2.

It's not so crazy. They lost to a team that has 20 fewer scholarship players then Michigan. They lost to a team that is greatly disadvantaged in ability to recruit compared to Michigan. As the winningiest college football program in America and the 5th ranked team in the nation, better is expected.

Unprecedented? Yes.
Unexpected? No

I don't think you can really blame Lloyd Carr entirely. The Michigan Players did not come out to play. Coaches can only do so much to motivate players, and what I saw out of Michigan was about as flat as a football team can get. He did make some mistakes mind you, going for two was one of several. But you can't rule out the players.

No it is not crazy. Any time a quality program looses to a
1-AA team things for the loosing team go down hill in a hurry. Just ask Jack Crowe what happened when Arkansas lost to the Citidal.

Is there such a thing as falling further when you're already out of the top 25?

Personally (and this is a lifelong Michigan fan talking), I would have been surprised if they were still in the top 25.

being victimized in one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history should knock anyone out of any rankings. it was the only game they have played. they don't look too good. appalachian state put up over 30 pts! technically they shouldn't have put up that many points vs michigans uncommited high school recruits.
