You will have to go through a certification course. Go to the National Ski Patrol site for info:

First aid and skiing ability. Not necessarily pretty skiing, but a rock solid ability to get through any conditions well.

But the best thing to do is contact the Ski Patrol Association wherever you happen to be, or the Ski Patrol of the mountain where you would like to patrol.
