For a live sketch, I charge $90 an hour, including travel time, if required.

Working from a photograph, I can sometime get away with asking for about $50 per hour.

You mentioned sketch, in color, so I would be using, either color pencils, or color markers.

Color or black and white, my hourly rate would be the same, but, clearly, a black and white pencil or charcoal sketch would take less time.

Please notice the disparity between the two groups of answers above mine. The lower estimates are those of amateurs, while the higher rate is that of a professional. If saving money is a priority, then it IS possible to find talented amateurs, but you often get what you pay for. A professional would not ask so high a price, unless he was SURE he could deliver a satisfactory portrait.

if you are doing it for a profession, i'd say $20-30.
