Hi all,

I'm 7 1/2 weeks pregnant and for the past few days I've had a mild cold. No fever or anything, but I have had quite a bit of conjestion and head stuffiness. I seem to be getting better (slowly) but this morning when I was throwing up (from morning sickness, I've been throwing up about once a morning every other day) I noticed that, besides the food that I ate, I was also throwing up some plegm that must have made it to my stomach. Do you think this is something I need to worry about or call my doctor about immediately? I don't think I have an infection or anything, and I haven't had any spotting or cramping, I just worry that some bad stuff might get to the baby. I have my first appointment with my OB one week from today, so I could ask her about it then, but I just wanted some opinions beforehand. Thanks a lot!

Having a cold won't bother your baby at all, evening if you are throwing up sometimes. It's also natural for some nasal secretions to find their way down to your stomach. Also, the stomach produces mucus on its own anyway.

It might even be that you don't have a cold. Many pregnant women experience regular nasal stuffiness throughout their pregnancy. Nasal spray can help, although you shouldn't use it for too long or it might end up drying out your sinuses.

Hope your morning sickness improves in the coming weeks. I'm 9 weeks along and have seen some improvement in mine, but it won't be totally gone until after the first trimester.

I am 5 1/2 weeks myself and have a major cheast/head cold. I have been coughing a stuffy runny nose myself. I haven't had any morning sickness at all, but I have thrown up a few times due to all the nasel drainage, and thats all I throw up is the phegm. Doc told me I could take theraflu or benedryl, and even sudafed, but I choose to just suffer through it. Getting a bit better today.

Hope you feel better soon.

actually, congestion & stuffiness is a common complain during pregnancy. nasal pasasges swell, and mucous increases, (due to increase in estrogen) so this is all totally normal. you may mention it to your ob, so she can tell you what to do about it. also, mention your vomitting, she can help with that too. make a list of questions to take with you so you don't forget!
