I think it's so they can forget their real lives, and live in a land of intoxication where everyone is a winner.... yeah right! Why would you drink while having a good time? So you will forget it? I just don't get it.

it helps a lot of people relax. the effects make many more at ease - this is a good thing in many social situations. My dad always has a beer first thing when he gets home, it just has become such a habit. Soda is full of sugar and bad for you. Alcohol can actually be benefitiary for ones health (in moderation).
Wine is a whole different story. Very complicated answer.

in most settings, its a social drug. It makes you less shy, uninhibited, more carefree. you feel good. People long to let go of the stresses of the every day, and fall into an intoxicated state. Why do 40+% of americans abuse perscription medications? Its for the same reason. To let go of the stresses of every day life. Its nice to not care, to be free of whatever is bothering us at that time. It makes us forget, it makes us feel good, and even tho it can make us sick, and sometimes doesnt taste that great, the benefit outweighs the negative.
some of us enjoy the drink, like a nice wine, or a good mixed drink, or quality beer. And drink to enjoy the drink, and not to get drunk.

A lot of adults drink Alcohol to forget their problems, they can't deal with the mess they got themselves into. Not all of them of course but most. It is a cheap way out. It is a cowards way out. Any kind of drug that puts you out of your mind is not good for you. I am like you, I hate it. I am bigger person than that. Obviously so are you. I thankyou for your question, it is glad to know there are some out there who are not weak and can stand up and be responsible for their on actions without trying to hide behind something. Congradulations!!!

Good question.... most soda, juices and other beverages taste better than beer, wine, and other alcoholic drinks. Alcohol is a poison and it TASTES like poison. I don't get it really! I think people learn from a young age, you drink it to be "cool" and being that most people are stupid, they just follow! Oh and to add to everyone else's answer... i am a 28 year old adult and I can relax, have fun and be social without alcohol and don't feel like I am missing out on life!

Its an inhibition-releasor. William James explained the appeal well, I think, in a famous passage in Varieties of Religious Experience.
"The sway of alcohol over mankind is unquestionably due to its power to stimulate the mystical faculties of human nature, usually crushed to earth by the cold facts and dry criticisms of the sober hour. Sobriety diminishes, discriminates, and says no; drunkenness expands, unites, and says yes. It is in fact the great exciter of the Yes function in Man. It brings its votary from the chill periphery of things to the radiant core. ...[It] is part of the deeper mystery and tragedy of life that whiffs and gleams of something that we immediately recognize as excellent should be vouchsafed to so many of us only in the fleeting earlier phase of what in its totality is so degrading a poisoning."

It's more cultured perhaps to know about different wines from around the world and have a sophisticated taste for good wine. It doesn't make you less classy for not drinking wine though. I'd rather have a good cheese instead of wine myself.

1.adults always think they have so many problems. alcohol is one of the ways that can make them forget it...at least for a moment
2.it is already a trendsetter. for ex in germany, it sounds like "when u don't drink alcohol, u are still mommie's kid!" together with alcohol come the disco, sex and drugs

Maybe it's because it 'helps' (well really, CAUSES) them to sort of slow down mentally and relax to such an extent they feel comfortable about the things around them.
Most peoplee who drinnk beer probably don't even like it, but they think they need it, and their brain tells the body to enjoy it.
I think that's how that works...
