" ......silence......then, background music.......Hay low. May eye plis speag to Steve Jones..." CLICK just hang up!
your friends or brother don't call you "steve jones" or whatever your name is. 5 seconds after you "rudely" hung up on them in the middle of their sentence, they will be on the phone with another potential sucker, and they will forget ALL about YOU. "...........silence........Hay low. May eye plis speag to.............

I used to pretend to be just an employer of the house, and tell them to call back when the house owners were in.. Then i pretended it was a bad line, and i couldn't hear them... Now i cant be bothered, so i tell them bluntly i'm not interested, and slam the phone down.. I usually feel quite sorry for cold callers, if they have to deal with people like me.. However, i so like star's idea of telling them to hold on because someone's at the door, and then keeping them waiting for half an hour that i think i'll try that next time.. If my hubbys in and picks up the phone he'll speak in rapid Italian.. Works wonderfully, because as yet we haven't had any cold callers that can speak fluent italian..

I've registered my phone number on a couple of don't -call lists so receive only a few calls a month now from companies I do business with anyway. I have an answering machine so when they leave a message and I'm reasonably sure it's for selling something, I just ignore it. I also get a few calls a week that trip the answering machine but the caller leaves no message so suspect this is a phone spammer.
I absolutely never bought anything from anyone over the phone and never will unless I call them.
Oh yeah, we get calls from politicians around voting time. They exempted themselves from liability under the don't-call legislation.

I work at home and have 2 lines, one personal and one for business. I suggest that you put your numbers on the federal do not call list. If your state has a do not call list then put your numbers on that also. By law you can still get calls from charities or companies that you have done business with within 90 days or something like that. So if I get a charity call I do one of 2 things. First I ask them to send information for me to review. If they are a legitimate charity they can do that, but do not give them your address. If they have your phone number they have your address. I tell them that I never give any money to a charity that I don't investigate first, then hang up.
OR
I tell them that we have already budgeted out charitable giving and will consider them next year.

I have caller ID and if I don't recognize the name/number, I don't answer the phone. I've noticed that many unsolicited calls come from "800" numbers so I just don't answer them. I have been receiving calls from the same "800" number every day now for over two weeks. I never answer and they never leave a message. You'd think they'd take a hint by now.

I know they are just trying to make a living, so I just politely tell them I'm not interested and thank them for the call. I never buy from cold callers since I have no clue who they are and I'm not giving any information over the phone unless I called them.

I registered my phone numbers with the national "Do not call list" and for the one in my State. Only one vendor chose to violate those laws over the past three years. I documented the calls and got a judgement against him in small claims court. Haven't heard from him or any others since.

In Australia we have a "do not call" list set up by the government. All you do is put your phone number on it and salesmen cant call. If they do you tell them you're on the list and they hang up. Their companies can be fined up to 1 million dollars. But before that I just said a straight "no thank you" and I would hang up without waiting for their reply. Worked every time.

While I don't abuse the caller, I never purchase anything over the phone. If I want it, I'll find it; and Don't call me, I'll call you are my guidelines. If that's the best job they can get, then, more power to them, but, the telephone is for my convenience, not theirs, and I'm the one who's paying for it--so I decide who talks on my phone, and who doesn't.

Thank God and AT&T for caller ID. No Name, phone #, no answerer here. Also thank God for talking Caller ID so I don't have to run over too the phone too see who is calling.
People using VOIP phone systems come thru as "Private or unavailable" on caller ID's.

I'm on the no call list. Before that I tried to politely say I'm not interested but that never worked so I hung up on them.
That's rude but not as rude as them calling during dinner hours or your time with your family after working all day.
