Water birth is where the mother sits in either a bathtub full of water or a small swiming pool, anything that will hold water that you can relax in. And you give birth in the water. Never really thought it was a good idea myself but I guess there are some women who think it is.

hey there! if you have the discovery health channel there is a show called house of babies and you will get to see exactly what you are asking. Some hospitals do not have that, but almost every birthing center does. I wanted to labor in the water but my hospital only had 2 rooms with bathtubs and you could not reserve them so too bad of that idea. But, I have had friends who have done the water birth and would not do it any other way, they labor and birth in the water. they state that the baby is acclimated so much easier and the mother does not have as much pressure since the water helps with your labor and also relieves some pressure with the buoyancy of the water. I think it would be wonderful, but unfortunately I will never get to experience it due to having to have a c-sect with all my children.

A water birth is a natural method where the laboring mother stays in a large tub of water and the baby is actually born under the water and brought quickly up to the surface to take its first breath.

Many mothers find that it is easier to labor in a tub of warm water where they can relax and find some pain relief. And supposedly, it's good for the baby because he goes from the liquid environment of the uterus to the liquid environment of the water. It's less stressful that way.

You give birth in water. It's a natural method and is supposed to ease the baby's transition from the womb to the world. The bouyancy from the water is also supposed to ease the pain of contractions. I think it's a really great idea...just not for me.
