I have a rat terrier mix and she is wonderful. She's a rescue, and she's very loyal. She doesn't need a leash, listens well, follows me around like a shadow. The best dog I've ever had. She does like to eat the cat's poop, though, so I have to watch that. Rescue dogs really are the way to go, they're so loyal and thankful, and there are so many good dogs that need a home because of irresponsible jerks. Plus, if you get them a little older, they're already housebroken.

I tend to like large dogs like Labs, but if you're looking for small, I would suggest: Yorkie, Havanese, Westie, Cocker Spaniel, Shitzhu, Puggle. Just search the web and you'll find a lot of different types.

I'm more of a big dog person myself, but since you're asking about small dogs I'd recommend a Maltese poodle! They are adorable and very playful!

Malamute is my favorite but if you want a small dog that is loyal and protective (as protective as a small dog can be anyway) miniature daschunds are adorable. My 11 year old daughter is buying one.

All dogs are great. Go to a shelter and find one that you bond with. It'll be cheaper and you'll be saving a life.
Specifically though, as far as smaller dogs go, I love dauchsund mixes. Good temperments.
All dogs rock though!

I have a shihtzu/pekenese mix. I never liked small dogs until I adopted this one. He is so loving and affectionate, smart, gets along with everyone, and he Doesnt SHED!!!!!
The only downfall is you have to get their hair cut every 3 months or so.

Cairn Terriers are awesome lil' dogs and they are great with children.
I've owned many breeds in my time however, my favourite has to be the heinz breed....you know, a mixture of everything.
Those dogs are never sick and they are so loyal.
