There are a lot of classic movies out there which a lot of answerers will reply with. One of the movies that nearly always gets overlooked is a film called "The Elephant Man" released back in 1980.
If you wish for a life changing experience regarding film and your outlook on how powerful a film can be, then this is the film for you. The pure emotion you get from this film is beyond words. Your heart will break many times over during the duration. The acting ability of the cast is outstanding and Anthony Hopkins delivers the best performance of his life.
Some films give you an emotional slap in the face, The Elephant Man puts your whole body into emotional breakdown. Heartbreaking but beautiful at the same time. The finest of David Lynchs' work and also the most powerful.
One of the greatest lines overlooked in film is that of Anthony Hopkins character on seeing John for the first time - "I pray to God that he's an idiot."
This film will scar you for life but you will be thankful for it.
