I like chelseas answer. I am a mother of 10 month old twin boys and let me tell you the first couple of months are SOOO hard. Feeding time is the worst, and most twins are small so they need to be fed often (per docs orders)
Get her the bottle holders!!!!!!! That would be the biggest lifesaver! Nobody got me those, but I soooo wish that I had them. That would be the best gift you could give. No matter what anyone says about propping bottles, it is ABSOLUTLEY necissary if you are mom of multiples! She will love you forever. A lot of people recommend diapers, I think diapers are a crappy gift. Yeah every baby needs diapers, but I cant even remember who gave me diapers and wipes and creams!, I do remember who gave me really cool gifts though!
But i also like buying her photo session!

Well define affordable. 20 bucks get a bunch of little things nail clippers, travel wipes holder, anything portable or travel size. Then throw it in a cute bag or decorate a new clean paint can with paper and ribbons.
I spent 70 on my friend with twins (she's been a good friend) and i got matching hooded towels, those baby robes and slippers, bibs they all matched. baby wash, lotion and a pack of diapers. So pretty much everything for bath time. They had yellow and pink ones (the dad was excited to have something not pink) And girls still look cute in yellow especially naked and at bath time!

I think the nicest thing you can do is offer to help out at the beginning. Give her a coupon book for offers to stay at her house one night and help with feeds/diaper changes/watching any other children. Bring her meals so her she doesn't have to cook. A coupon for a house cleaner. I just had one baby and those things meant the most to me. Other thoughtful things are everyday use stuff like baby wipes, diapers, bath and body lotion. The everyday stuff gets used quickly. Or offer to do her grocery shopping for her so she and her husband can relax.

Diapers and wipes-- I have 4 month old twin boys and I have just now ran out of diapers that I got from all of my baby showers and let me tell you that was the best thing not having to run out and buy diapers everytime I turned around.

diapers, wipes and diaper-rash creams.
It is very practicule but it is much needed..especially with twins.
you can wrap them up in a pretty basket that she can reuse.

OR
Savings Bonds. You can buy a $25.00 bond for $12.50...those are always great to receive.

AND
Don't forget mommy and daddy, make them a dinner or desert (ex, baked ziti, something they can freeze and heat up easily). That was the best thing i recieved after i gave birth.

Food!!! after the mother deliver the babies, try to help as much as you could and preperation for the food is a hugeee help for the family. Just by being there for the first week is the biggest gift if that would be for me :)
