y(x - 1) = z
First, divide both sides by y

(x - 1) = z / y

Now add 1 to both sides

Usually when the question asks, what is x or what is something? It simply means you have to express that "something" in terms of the other things. So in this case, we're supposed to make x the subject of the equation.

y(x-1) = z

Expand the terms on the left of the equation:
yx-y = z

Add y to both sides of the equation:
yx = z + y

Divide both sides of the equation by y:
x = (z+y)/y (ANS)

There! You've now made x the subject of the equation.

Hope that helps you in explaining to your daughter how to solve the problem.
Cheers! =)

x usually stands for the unknown, what is y & z doing here?
If this is the only function, to Slove the x, you have to give the value of y & z. just put the value of the y& z in this equation: x=z/y +1
Or you have other 2 sets of functions, then we can solve the value of x,y,&z
