Maybe because their livelihood depends on the amount of crop every year. If their is a drought it would probably be more honorable to take your own life than starve to death. Just a thought.

They commit suicide firstly for the unemployment. It is increasing day by day. People not afford things for thereselves.Secondly, big competition between them. Farmers who are zamindars or have money can afford pesticides, insecticides, good pastures, and uses hyv seeds but farmers who are poor cannot afford.Due to costly fertilizers there crops are healthy and nutritious and on the other hand they are not as healthy.Govt. choses only the good and healthy crops.Third reason is the money lending process.People from diff. parts of the country have to pay huge debts to zamindars and banks. When they are unable to pay the money, they have a only way left that is "suicide".
But govt. are also taking measures to avoid unemployment in the agricultural field. They are trying to abolish zamindari system and are also introducing new and good schemes.

heyya dear....
Hundreds of farmers in India's most prosperous state, Maharashtra, have committed suicide this year as a result of failed crops, import competition and crippling interest payments, a leading farm lobby group said.
Farmer suicides have been on the rise since the late 1990s due to poor harvests and trade liberalisation in India, where low-tech agriculture supports nearly 60 percent of the 1 billion-plus people but only forms 20 percent of the economy.
The communist-backed coalition government is trying to improve the lot of the rural poor, planning irrigation projects to areas dependent on sometimes erratic monsoon rains, but lobbyists say the number of deaths is on the increase.
"Up to 400 farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra so far this year," Vijay Jawandhia, senior leader of lobby group the Shetkari Sangathana, told reporters this week.
"Crop failures, lowering of import tariffs and high interest rates charged by private money lenders are forcing them to take such a drastic step."
Government estimates are much lower.
"According to numbers available with us, 134 farmers have committed suicide up to September this year," a senior official with the government of the western state of Maharashtra told Reuters on Friday.
Farmers struggle with poor irrigation, lack of cold storage and little access to foreign markets. Agriculture is the slowest growing area of India's dynamic economy, averaging just 2 percent in the first half of this financial year, which ends in March.
In contrast, services and manufacturing have been expanding at double-digit rates, giving rise to a bigger, richer, urban middle class.
The Congress Party-led coalition government is mindful that this growing disparity was one big reason why the rightist Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition fell from power in 2004.
The new government kicked off a multi-billion-dollar employment guarantee scheme for the rural poor this year that is expected to strain already-stretched federal finances.
