or has the US turned away from what it was meant to be and become what is was created to get away from?

What happened to freedom? I am now being forced to take a health plan that I can't afford, I have no say in what doctors I can see, or how much coverage I can get.

More info. I am retired (disabled) and on Social Security. I just got a letter in the mail that I HAVE to go on Medicare and they will be lowering my check payments to cover the cost of the Medicare. I am not allowed to choose my doctor or my coverage, it is all decided for me. I have no say in it. I can't get another plan because I am disabled and on a fixed income.

If you want to explore just how we got here, here's a four step process:

1. Read the Declaration of Independence, and meditate on what the status of the several states was after the severance of ties to England.

2. Contemplate where the framers of the Constitution got the authority to participate in the Convention; precisely whose delegates were they, and in what capacity did they sign the final document.

3. Read the actual Constitution, and look for any part that places obligations and duties on individual citizens, and understand the relationship it created between the federal government it created, and the states that created it.

4. Consider the effect on the dynamics of that relationship that the Seventeenth Amendment caused.

I suspect you will be able to see that the repeal of the 17th Amendment is necessary to restore the freedoms we originally had in this country, one of which is individual autonomy over health/healthcare matters.

To answer your question, "what happened to freedom?", the 17th Amendment is what happened to it. And, no, I do not mean the 16th.

OK. I wish you'd have told us more about your situation, before the America Sucks rant.

So I gather (by your avatar) that you are in the trucking industry. How can they possibly FORCE you to pay for anything? Refuse to do it. When you talk about that you have no say in what doctors can see, what are you referring to? If this is a drug testing thing, well, then you've got some interesting manouvers to pull off, or yeah, they WILL get you.

I'll be honest, there's NO WAY I will EVER pay for my own insurance FOR ANYTHING, because the insurance industry in this country is a complete RACKET. (So I totally understand your fustration- I just wish I had more info on your situation, to see if I could offer a practical answer, not just commiserate with you). People all over the country are paying outlandish premiums, not just for health insurance, but home owners insurance, car insurance etc. and then in the face of true emergencies being told that they are not covered for what they were paying for. Insurance companies have the right to refuse to cover you, they are allowed to drop you from your plan arbitrarily. AND YES, THE US GOV'T IS LETTING THEM GET AWAY WITH IT.

What the hell is THAT? So DON'T PAY FOR IT. I would seek an employer who provides coverage for it's employees. I currently have NO insurance, and it is troubling, but there's NO WAY I'm going to pay these shifty f$%Kers, and then have them leave me twisting in the breeze.

Good Luck.

This is the American Dream.

Can't have universal healthcare or affordable healthcare, might take away from insurance companies stockholders, and we can't have that. God forbid someone should have to give something up.
