Like a lot of the others, find it difficult to specify favourite side-kick, though it would be Rose as initially Martha took a little while to get used to, but that was just getting over not having Rose anymore and now I can't separate them.
What I really love about the new Dr. Who's is that the side-kicks aren't side-kicks they're fully paid up team members now. They aren't there just waiting for the Dr. to sort them out while they either a) scream or b) walk blindly (dumbly) into naff situations and then revert to a!
Rose & Martha are smart cookies, Rose is very streetwise, she's loyal but no pushover and never going to be just along for the ride. Martha is obviously well educated as a Dr. she should be, you think she would be much more analytical about things and less emotional than Rose was but she's not she also pretty feisty and emotional. In fact I think the only way I really separate the characters attachment to Dr. Who is that Martha loved the man and Rose loved the legend, the romance of the journey with him became the greater attraction whereas I think Martha would have picked a time & place and settled for him on his own.
Whew, didn't know I was gonna think all that but enjoyed writing it!

Doctor Who is my favourite TV programme of all-time. I've been a fan since it began in 1963 and am just old enough to remember the early days of William Hartnell as the original Doctor.
I have been enjoying the new series greatly. I thought that series 1 of the new DW was very good, but not quite up to the standard of the best stories in the classic series. Series 2 was a bit of a curates egg in my opinion, with some great episodes and also some pretty poor ones. Series 3 was a massive improvement on the previous 2, however, and marked a return to Doctor Who story telling at its best. It was consistently excellent all the way through, with great writing and some of the best acting (particularly from David Tennant) in DW's 44 year history.
As for the companions, I liked Martha a lot and I liked Rose as well. I think both Freema Agyeman and Billy Piper are fine young actresses with a great future. I can't really say I prefer one over the other, although I preferred the style of story telling in the episodes featuring Martha.
I think a lot of stories with Rose were concentrating too much on her and her family and on the romantic angle. With Martha it was much more like the classic series - just the Doctor and his companions having adventures in space and time. Martha's character reminded me a lot of the Doctor's stronger and more independent female companions from the classic series like Sarah Jane and Romana.
Anyway - its all-change again in the next series, with the return of Donna, played by Catherine Tate, as the Doctor's companion. I'm quite looking forward to that since it will be interesting to see how differently Tate handles the character in a full series, rather than just the Christmas special. I think Martha will be a hard act to follow, although she will be coming back halfway through the next series, of course. So it will also be very interesting to see how she and Donna interact.

I love Doctor Who!!! Every Saturday, when it's on, I'm glued to the sofa (and hiding behind a cushion because of the scary monsters!)
I like Martha & Rose for different reasons. I like how Martha went with the Doctor even though her mum told her not to & rose's personality.

Well apart from the fact that David Tennant is the sexiest man ever!! I always liked Doctor Who, I love the newer series (With Chris n Dave) Even though she annoyed me a bit I have to say I rather have Rose, her and the Doctor were a great team and you could see how they could be in love. Doomsday was heartbreaking!!
Martha fell for the Doctor after 2 episodes (you can see how!) and she was sweet and smart but there is just something missing now.
What do you think?

I love it and I liked both of them, but I probably prefer Martha, mainly because she thinks more. Rose was just brave.
I do hope that they leave the who fancies who thing alone for a while - a companion that is just a mate would be nice. Maybe even a man!

Martha came into her own at the end of the last series, but took her time to grow on me. Rose was good, but i'll never forgive Billie Piper for releasing those horrible pop singles that she did.

I like Doctor Who a lot; and I prefer Rose. Mainly because I think they make such a great couple and the first shows I saw, she was the side-kick.

I like the most recent series, never used to watch it before Christopher Eccleston was the doctor... I think I like Rose better but don't mind Martha either... Preferred Torchwood to Dr. Who

Rose - i dont know why but i do know that i watched and enjoyed every episode with her in it (I was so happy when 'Chritopher "fantastic" Eccleston' was replaced). The new series with Martha, I just gave up watching after 3 episodes, boring. Is it just me or did anyone else think Catherine Tate was superb in the Xmas Special

I loved Rose but she is gone now... trapped in the other Earth forever... so now my favourite is Martha because I can see her in the new series. For me the best episode is always the one I have yet to see!
I also am looking forward to more stories with Donna!
