the easiest way, if youre having trouble understanding absolute values, is to do any arithmetic (if necessary) within the | |'s and take the most positive number (in other words, if there is a negative sign, drop it).
1. |-124| = 124 (drop the negative sign)
2. |-31+15| = |-16| = 16 (compute first, then drop sign)
3. -|8+9-21| = -|-4| = -4 (here, the negative sign on the OUTSIDE does not come in to play until the very end. Notice how we compute first, and |-4| = 4 by dropping the sign, but then applied the outside negative sign at the end.

you are using brackets and not absolute vallue bars.
[ - 124 ] = - 124
â£- 124â£= 124. . .Absolute balue
- - - - - - -
[ - 31 + 15 ] =
[- 15 ] = - 15
â£- 31 + 15â£=
â£- 16 â£= 16. . .Absolute value
- - - - - - - -
- [ 8 + 9 - 21] =
- [ 17 - 21 ] =
- [ - 5] = 5
-â£8 + 9 - 21â£=
- â£17 - 12â£=
- â£- 5 ⣠=
- 5. . .Absolute value

You perform your normal operations on items within the brackets. Then convert that value to a positive value as indicated by the brackets. Then perform outside operations. In answer number 3 the outside operation is indicated by a minus sign to negate the number.

Absolute value is just the magnitude of the distance of the point from 0 i.e abs(-1) = abs(1) = 1
1. abs(-124) = 124
2. abs(-16) = 16
3. abs(-4) = 4

gebobs' answer on #3 shoudl be -4, not +4. The negative sign in front of everything will negate the absolute value. Otherwise, he is correct.
