"Had Serena played her game, she would have won the match".. how is that?!! Why didn't Serena give her best if that is the argument?.. Justine was so good and forced Serena to commit errors throughout the match.. that's it

Simple. Serena, at the top of her game, is better than anyone on tour. Remember that before this year, Serena owned Henin. The last three grand slam events, Henin has ousted Serena. Reasons: Serena hadn't been challenged in a while, got injured and stopped focusing on tennis. Henin is probably the only tennis player to take advantage of Serena's loss of focus. The commentator might be right: When Serena plays her game (which hasn't happened in the last two years--even the Australian win wasn't one of her better performances), she's pretty much unbeatable. But then again, maybe Serena has just lost that drive and that edge necessary to beat truly great players. But I'll still take an out-of-shape, unfocused Serena over every other woman player not named Henin. Wouldn't you?

I don't believe that anyone was trying to take anything away from Henin, it's just that it was obvious that Serena was not playing the way she is capable of playing. Of course the person on the other side of the net is going to have something to say about what you are able to do, but it was obvious that Serena was not at her best. I personally think that a lack of match play was a factor. Fitness may also be a factor.

I must also comment on some of the answers to this question. Why is the name-calling necessary? "Serranex" accuses Serena of having no class and then proceeds to call her a cow. What's up with that? It's very disturbing that people find it necessary to behave this way. We can disagree without being disagreeable.

Check the network you are watching on. Bias. It's sad but true as this does not help the game, but ironic as they are so vocal about promoting tennis. However, at the same time, you'd have to expect some of their bias and comments because there is/are no American women close to the top groups right now or someone with positive star status or someone to be legend status like a Chris Evert, etc. Even though the Williams sisters are not the best in tennis game/style/attitude and not even tennis ambassador role model material, the American tennis groups need someone to root for. The game is so international now and they've run out of American players. It's too bad Davenport and Rubin are not playing right now and other girls had retired. They are really classy and naturally talented people like Henin. Try to watch a different TV network from the international sources.

About the quote, that's very ignorant of them because they should be able to realize that it's not up to them to win. It never was. They are not a Graf, Federer. The truth is that Williams game be regressing from its peak, or she is unable to do anything due to her opponent beating her off the court and outplaying/dominating her. A real champion and legend would be able to fend off all of these kinds of challenges - good day or bad/off day.

the same commentators stated that if nadal 'played well' he would win.

i saw most of his match, and he played well - just not well enough to win.

more than any other sport, tennis is completely unpredictable and hearing ignorant statements like that just anger me.

i watched almost all of serena's match and she played well and could have lost the first set much more easily than she did.

she fought and played very nearly even, losing in the tie breaker.

i find it hard to fathom how pro-american the announcers can be at times. tennis is perhaps the most international of all sports - why must commentators fall back on tired old ethnocentric statements like the ones they made?

i don't get it...

The poor Williams sisters, always plagued with "injuries", but only willing to show up with gusto in the grand slam tournements. They are a mockery of women's tennis. There is nothing to admire in them. As for that commentator, they were certainly ignorant of Henin's game and as usual making excuses for Serena's loss. Henin is the better player, everyone knows it and if anything no one would miss the Williams sisters if they disappeared from tennis. They practically already have.

They are correct but that's not to take anything from Justine. I think some people are getting to wrapped up in the comments and also people are such racist that anything positive said about Serena must not be true. They are not putting down Justine because she's very good, but we all know that Serena is not playing her game. Thats the bottom line.

Go Serena, you are a far better player than that Herpes carrying flat face and flat azz Justine. Enjoy while you can Justine because remember, Serena did not play her game.

Probably because he's an American! They just don't get it. Henin is a way better! She is phisically and mentally the strongest women on Tour. She's the best of the best. Williams can only make such excuses after their defeats, because they are not fair enough to admit someone is better!

there is no way serena could beat henin unless she tied her up. don't pay attention to the commentators as they are paid to lie to make the williams look good even when they stink to keep them from whinning or screaming racists///

Justine won only because Serena wasn't healthy.

Hint: Think about the nationality of the players and the nationality of the commentators.

I'm so glad that arrogant, classless cow has been eliminated.
