From a technology advancement point of view;
I believe that the exploration of space is a better place to spend money than on wars.
Also,
Wars divide people, the exploration of space unites us.

"Because it is there"
Why did Columbus sail West for India ? Why did Newton start thinking about an apple's fall ?
It may seem to be a costly venture now but for the ultimate survival of mankind and life as a whole, space exploration is important. It helps us to understand the Universe on the grandest scale of all and the technological spin offs have great value.

It keeps scientists happy. It provides the technology companies with lots of tax dollars to build neat stuff, keeping lots of people employed. Most people simply don't care. Historically people have NOT been explorers. Just a few odd-balls and misfits. In a country like ours, with scientific pretensions, a majority of the population doubts the obvious truth of evolution, being quite happy with the revealed truths in a bronze age story book. With the exception of nomads, by far most people never strayed more than 20 miles from home.

Space exploration is like colonization - it has military undertones. If you think man has decided to stop at the nuclear bomb, think again. How effective a space-launched war will be for a country that has the technology to implement it. It is the next step for war.
