17 is the correct answer. you can go to redsox.com and click on standings up top...you can select the elimination number to be displayed in the standings...it is fun to watch it go down game after game! Go Sox!

Red Sox Magic Number is 17 Sox win and Yankees lose Today its 15, Both or Lose it 16, Yankees win and Sox Lose its 17, the Magic Number goes down more when You won and they lose.

The magic number is 17. They don't need 17 wins. They need any combination of 17 Sox wins and Yankee losses.

As noted, 17. Earliest possible clinch date if the schedule maintains (no rainouts or such) -- Friday, 9/14, against (heh) the Yankees.

But since clinching on that date requires perfection-- Sox only win, Yanx only lose, it probably won't happen then. Look to about a week later.

I will say that Red Sox do take division, but will lose in play-offs. Division titles today mean diddly squat to some degree as long as you get into the play-offs. Look the Brave won 12 or 13 NL East titles & all they show for it is 1 World Series title. Granted that proves they were consistent in winning but also remember that the other teams Phillies & Mets were that good during most of those years too.
