I found the best thing to use are those sticky flags or otherwise known as page markers. They are made by post-it and probably some other companies. They do not mark up the book and you can mark exactly where you left off so you do not lose your spot. I love using these!!

I use a regular paper bookmark in my bible, and a crocheted strip......I also use a clear see thru 6" ruler in my sewing books....And I use an envelope corner on some pages in my cook books....I will also use anything handy,,,what happens to all those bookmarks we bring home,,,,,,,are they with the other sock we can't find when we wash clothes?
Some people use a paperclip,,,I seen the marks on books checked from the library. Right now, I have one of those Dolce & GGabbana perfumed cards,,they give you at the perfume shop....makes a great bookmark for my mystery books....

I found these great bookmarks at the store called "Last Line" bookmarks. They have a small window in the middle and you put them on the side of the book as opposed to the top of the book. The window marks the line that you were reading when you put the book down. I have fallen in love with them. They are reasonable priced to boot.

If I can ever find my bookmark, I use it...but most of the time I lose it somehow and just bend the corner of the page or leave the book open where I left off.

I just fold down the corner of the page I stop on. I always loose bookmarks. Some people think that's disrespectful, but I think that's stupid. It's the content that deserves respect, not the book itself.

here's a really good tip: u know when you go to a perfume shop and get that strip of paper with perfume on it for you to test the smell?
use it as a bookmark!! it's excellent!!! not only do you not have to waste money to get a oh-so-boring bookmarks, by the time you finish reading your book, it'll smell fabulous and gets rid of that dusty book smell.
try it!

I usually use a postcard. Few years ago I bought a stack of postcards with funny wildlife jokes on it and have been using them ever since. Even switch them sometimes for variation! But if one the postcards are not on hand, any slip of paper will do...

I have a book thong that I love to use. Or else I don't use one at all, I usually remember the page or chapter where I left off.

a sales receipt if I get it at a store.
a library slip if it's a library book.
a piece of the invoice or enclosed junk mail if it's from amazon or any online service.
the card if it was a gift.
My system is based on what's at hand, and has no grand design other than getting it done.
