Why is it that any kind of open debate about this country's relationship with Israel is discouraged.....and people ask "why do we need to talk about it?"

It's a catch-all situation.
You are not allowed to question anything about Israel or its policies for fear of being accused of anti - semitism.
So they can blithely carry on doing whatever they want free from criticism.
Also known as a bunker mentality ie ; everyone is out to 'get' them.

So, from your point of view, if someone gives an opinion that is anti Israel and someone else calls them on it, and even gives an argument why such an opinion may be anti Semitic, then that is stifling free debate on the subject?
So, in other words, the anti Israel crowd must be free to speak their minds without criticism?

It seems from my point of view that on Yahoo Answers, there are more people complaining about people who are saying that anti Zionism is anti semitic then there are ACTUAL people saying that anti Zionism is anti semitic.

And for the record, yes, anti Zionism CAN BE anti semitic. Are you willing to make the distinction? Or are you going to cover for those that hide their anti semitism behind anti Israel polemics.

Well, the Israelis, as a nation, as a people, and as the foundation of the Jewish and Christian religions, have been at the center of so very many conflicts over faith. When people see the conflict, it is very difficult to maintain their objectivity. They will want to take sides and be pro this or anti that. It is human nature.

We should, of course, all strive for the perfect Christian love for all of our brothers on the earth and pray for their ultimate salvation. That state of perfect love (agape) has been achieved only by the Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Because most of Israel's policies deal with the survival of their country against the radical Arab/Islamo-facists that want to emulate Hitler and wipe Israel off the map.
You know, those pease-loving Moslems that the lefties in Congress want to talk too so much!
The open debate is discouraged because war and defending yourself is politically incorrect to dumocrats.

You can debate it all you like, but we will always support Israel because they are a free nation surrounded by the hate of Islamic fascism. So go head, debate. Nobody sane will listen.

because those usually discussing such things are closet nazis. they speak against everything jewish regardless of the politics and believe israel as a nation has no right to exist.

israel wants to be left the hell alone. arab nations should open their billions of acres of land and make a nice home for the terrorist rats in palestine whose every breath is drawn to create ways to murder israelis and "wipe israel off the map".

This means very little.
So some people will call you names and try to over-simplify the discussion.
Some people will not.
You find this in every debate.

The kind of "open debate" I have seen has often been quite nasty, not really "open debate".

Special groups can't take scrutiny. It's not just them, but they are a good case in point.
