The pond probably represents the simplicity of life without interference from the 'outside world' (the opportunities, temptations, dangers, etc. of dealing with others who are different than we are).

That's just my take.

This is symbolism. Many stories start and quit at the same location to sygnify a new begining, only older, wiser now.
The other answer is the author is all wet, but this is fiction and we already knew that, so it's probably the former, or maybe...na thats ridiculous. stay with symbolism.

the author made us a the "full circle effect" type of writing a novel... just like Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, the starting and ending place is a lake... where you began is where you end...
