Hitler wanted conquest. He preferred those conquests to be easy. He used threats, and intimidation as far as possible and the major powers played along with him.
They acquiesced in his annexation of Austria in the An Schustz (sp?) and then turned belly up when he stole the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia, and eventually to the absorption of the rest of Czechoslovakia.
I believe he was actually surprised that his invasion of Poland lead to Britain and France declaring war. I think he expected them to abandon Poland to his threats and saber-rattling.
If he had been right, I think he would have turned his attention to the west after subduing Poland and would have demanded a return of Alsace and Lorraine. If that had not brought war, there is no telling where he would have turned next. Hitler felt that the Western Democracies lacked the courage and determination to actively oppose his Thousand Year Reich. With Chamberlain as Prime Minister, he was pretty well right.
Hitler was mad, but he was no fool. He wanted conquest, but he was in no hurry to get into a major war. I believe he miscalculated in his Polish Policy, and brought war at least two years before he was ready.
So your historian was probably more or less correct in saying the Second World War was "Hitler's Personal War."

well lets see:
he was stabbed, gassed, i think attempted hung, and a few other things in World war 1
so that probably made him mad that germany lost.
then he blamed the Treaty of Versailes for Germany's problems. then he blamed the Gews.
He wanted to rule the world.
yeah id say he wanted war.

Hitler sought only simple justice for his people. It was Britain & France who declared war. Russia invaded Poland too.
