I have a 8 speed DVD writer why does it take over an hour to backup data on to disc when it should take no more then twenty minutes at 8 speed and how do i solve the problem

8x is the theoretical maximum. It is rarely achieved (like 8 meg broadband). It would take a really fast PC to feed data to the drive fast enough to reach this speed. In reality the drive buffer is filling up slowly then a block is written at 8X, then it waits for the next data to arrive.

8 speed is not quick and DVD takes 4 GB of data. Throw ropey writing software, like that built into Windows XP or DirectCD, for example, and there you go...

It's not rocket science.

Maybe because you have only disc that write upto a certain speed ie 2x also maybe you haven't changed the default writing speed setting in the burning software you are using

8 speed is not exactly fast is it in this day and age and also never believe everything you read on the tin unless it contains ronseal products

ALL POSSIBLE REASONS:

Slow hard disk
x8 is not fast at all
DVD's your using aren't capable of running full speed
Virus Infection
System resources being used up

8 is not very fast.

I would advise you getting another one.
