I assume she wants to use the laptop for a wireless connection to the Internet. A wired connection to the Internet would be a simple matter of connecting one end of an ethernet cable to the laptop, and the other end of the cable to the DSL or cable modem you are using.

For a wireless laptop connection, you will need a wireless router. It will connect to your modem, and once configured per the instructions it comes with, will allow you to access the Internet on a wireless-enabled laptop (will have a built-in wireless transmitter/receiver, or you will have to buy a wireless card for it).

I have a wireless router for my laptop. The internet connection is connected to the router and you just have to follow the directions to configure the computer. It has to have a wireless card in it, which most new ones have. The computer doesn't have to actually be connected at all.

Connect the adsl cable to the laptop and the phone line to the router.
