Can you give some examples of some kids that have been able to break away from their parent's work and establish a name of their own?

Rachel - I think, at the very least, he's still touring. I haven't heard anything about new material coming out, but I'm always the last to know.

Steve S - it was hearing Julian Lennon's single from years ago that actually inspired this question.

lovnrckets - Sheila E was very cool. Chicks that want to get into percussion don't have a ton of female influences, but she was definitely one, and one of the best.

Oh yeah, definitely. You would have to consider the genetic predisposition. They would have a leg up up any individual who has zero musical talent in their family. Some examples:

Shelia E - daughter of Pete Escovedo who played drums with Santana.

Jeff Buckley - son of tim Buckley, who out-shined dad in a major way.

Michael Jackson - I know you are a huge fan of Jacko, he came from a show business family of musically inclined people.

The Neville Brothers - I like the guy on SNL who does the Aaron Neville imitiation, freaking hilarious. But yeah, the whole family is musically inclined.

Prince - maybe he's just like his father, 2 BOLD! Dad was a pianist, mom sang.

I know there are a ton more, I'll add them as they come to me.

Hi Sookie, You ask an interesting question, and, yes, I think I understand it. : ) I don't think a musician needs to 'abandon' their youth, or upbringing, at any point in their career. An artist should be able to address whatever issue they care to - with the proviso that, depending upon circumstances beyond the artist's influence, their work may fall flat with the public. I'm reminded of a story I read last week about The Boss opting to perform at halftime: a longtime fan was loudly lamenting this apparent 'pandering' to wealth, or publicity, or some other kind of 'sell out' that his image/career/self-actualization has generally avoided, if not shunned. What a pompous so-called fan!!! No matter if this person was a fan and friend of Springsteen's going back to, say, grade school, Bruce is under NO OBLIGATION to make his career choices in keeping with some fan's idealized concept of heroism! (You ought to read the guestbook at the King Crimson web site at DGM - many individuals complain long and loud about what King Crimson SHOULD be doing, in their view; it's as if by proclaiming themselves as fans, and buying some CDs and concert tickets over the years, then they somehow deserve to not only get whatever they ask for, but also the way they want it.)

Yes!
Jeff Buckley was the son of Tim Buckley, Hank the 3rd (solo outlaw country and with metal band Down) is the son of Jr and Grandson of the great hank Williams (looks like him too!), Sean and Julian Lennon (half brothers and sons of John) Rosanne Cash (Johnny's Girl), Dwezil Zappa (frank's boy), Carleene Carter (Daughter of June carter-Cash, 3th generation of the MEGA influential Carter Family, the ground work of country music). Wilson-Phillips (the offspring of beachboys and the mammas & the pappas members),and Nelson -Matthew and Gunner (Ricky Nelson's Twins).

I tried to keep the list to include ones that stayed with music instead of goin into acting or athletics. I also tried to exclude those who didn't totally escape the shaddow of the parent (Zach Starsky- Ringo Star, Jason Bonham-John Bonham of zeppelin).

The best example I can come up with is Hank Williams Jr. His father was the single most popular country artist of all time, and I'd say that Junior is doing just fine for himself. It still remains to be seen, but Hank III and Mason Jennings (son of Waylon) seem to be carving out a nice little niche themselves.

There are examples (Hank Williams,. Hank Williams Jr.), but generally, aside from having a foot in the door in the industry, the children of successful musicians face the near impossible odds of "making it big" as most other people in the world.

Tal Bachman, son of Randy Bachman (of The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive aka "BTO"), has had a fairly successful musical career. His biggest hit has been "She's So High", a great little tune that came out some time in the late 1990's:

Successful ones -
Son (Father):
Ravi Coltrane (John), Joshua Redman (Dewey), Mtume Heath (Jimmy), Bernard Allison (Luther), Bill Morganfield (McKinley aka Muddy Waters).

Unsuccessful ones-
Julian or Sean Lennon, Lisa Marie Presley, Ozzy's kids (I can't even remember the names).

The successful ones are those who carry on the tradition without exploiting the fame. They find their own 'voice' and unique qualities, using the passed-down genes properly.

Success can be defined on a variety of levels. Bob Marley was one of the greatest reggae artists, if not the best, and his children, Ziggy, have had good careers.

Also Jason Bonham has done well in his fathers kit.
