This has happened to me, not because I went to a 'bad' site, but because of an aggressive attack. It's called a "hijack".

Spyware detectors, like SpybotS&D or Adaware, don't do anything. Many of the hijackers are written to be immune.

The only way I found to fix it was to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the OS. PC pros couldn't fix it & also suggested a wipe.

The real pisser is having to listen to the IT professional jerks lecture me about porn sites, even AFTER I told them it was an aggressive attack that came on as I was accessing a weather report site.

Your computer is infected with spyware.

Spyware is a program with the main objective of monitoring users activities. But it can also steal private information, install unwanted software, redirect browsers to other websites than the ones the user wants to visit or even displays advertisements.

You are infected with spyware if:

* You see too much pop-up advertisements.
* Your browser has toolbars that you haven't installed.
* Your homepage has changed (and you can't change it back).
* Other settings have changed without your permission.
* Your computer is slow.

To get rid of spyware and keep your computer clean you have to use an antispyware or even more. You can download free antispyware software from http://www.kiete.com/antispyware.html

take a look at the instructions below for Spybot

my "spam":
all of these are free:

Run CCleaner first (just run it with the default settings). You'll get a better idea what infections you have when running anti-spyware scans. http://www.ccleaner.com/

Spybot: http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html
After updating switch to advanced mode, to do so select “mode” from the toolbar and check “Advanced Mode”, it will ask if you want to switch modes, say “yes”. Now you have multiple tabs on the left of the screen, select the “tools” tab and click on the “IE Tweaks” icon. Make sure that you check “Lock Hosts file read-only as protection against hijackers”. After its updated select the “Immunize” icon, click on the green + to immunize your system. This will help prevent any new spyware/malware infestation by blocking new items. THIS MUST BE REDONE AFTER EVERY UPDATE SO THAT YOU ARE PROTECTED AGAINST THE LATEST THREATS.

Also scan with Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

AVG Anit-spyware: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5

Someone else here recommends this app instead of Spybot and Ad-aware, you might want to give it a try: http://www.superantispyware.com/

Also, Javacool Software's SpywareBlaster for resident protection: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

You can get BitDefender8 as an on-demand virus scanner:
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-Free-Edition-v7.html

You don't want to run two resident anti-virus programs but using one as an on-demand scanner is fine.

You're right, it's a spyware. You may download anti-spyware. Mine is Ad-Aware. Or you may activate your Windows Defender if you got a genuine Windows OS. Good luck!!

'SuperAntiSpyware' will sort this out for you, and comes with 'homepage hijack protection' so that your homepage won't be changed again without your knowledge or consent.
