It's not unusual for a go-cart to have a "live" axle - meaning that the whole axle rotates & there is no diferential.

If the axle had two sprockets then each engine could have it's own drive chain. If each engine had a centrifugal clutch then they could act independantly if one failed.

The only connection I would have between the engines is a link between their throttles so the gas peddle would operate both simultaneously.

Some carts will have only one wheel driven by the axle. The other will "freewheel" for easier turning. In this case, having two engines drive one rear tire will probably make traction an issue - you'll end up burning up one tire while the other gets little wear.

Just hook them up one on each side of the kart. Two sets of sprockets and 2 centrifugal clutches. You also need two cables to work the carburetors at the same time. One engine should do the job and save you some money on the kart.

A lawn mower engine will not work on a go kart since it has a vertical shaft engine. You need an edger engine with a horizontal shaft.

You could mount one engine over one rear wheel and the other engine over the other rear wheel with a direct drive belt pulley clutch setup for each engine and wheel. Make each wheel's axle independent of the other. Then you could drive it with one or both engines running. Don't forget to protect your ears from the noise!
