If it is anything like my son's it will be similar to this BUT it means different things in different years

level 5 Above average
level 4 Average
level 3
level 2
level 1

Level 3 2 & 1 All these levels mean 'below the nationally expected level of achievement for most 11 yr olds.

So depending on how old your son is - this is only a guide

ADDED: I have just found my son's old school reports and checked up on them - the gradings listed above are correct for levels after infant school - so I'm guessing from year 4 - 6 prior to going to senior school.

Level 5 is the top mark and levels 3,2 & 1 show that the teachers feel that the child is performing under the national average. Hope that helps - but don't worry too much - as the child begins the SATS exams - the results change slightly anyway.

These may be his CAT scores - Some schools use these to make sure that children are making the correct progression from key stage 1. So in year 4 they should be higher than the KS1 sats results.

What grades have they put on the report?
If he just did his yr6 SATs he should have about a level 4 if that's what you mean.
If he gets a 3 he's a bit below average, a 5 is a bit above.

There is no way to guess the system that the school uses. Each school is unique in this respect.
The best way to accurately find out is to contact the school and ask for a written explanation.
You might also want to find out how your son compares to others in his year group.

Thx in advance means, Thanks in advance which means Thank You in advance.
They have requested something of you or him.
They are thanking you in advance for doing this request to their liking.
This has nothing to do with the grades assigned. A-Y, Z is not a letter grade in the school It is used to indicate a student sleeping in class zzzzzzzzzzzz. (philomelian humor). The grades will be A-F or maybe P/F pass/fail or I-incomplete.
guessing any further would be foolish on my part.
Philomel in not a fool, except sometimes when he is.
