I own a shop, and what I think is this; The pan should drop down without removing the starter, but if it won't then remove the starter. If the engine is still in the vehicle, then you need to jack it up higher so the pan will clear the oil pick up & screen that hangs down. Don't knock it out of positon when you do this so you can put it back in the correct place. If it falls off when you go back, and you don't know it, there won't be any oil pressure, and the damage will take place. I would remove the starter anyway, because it will give you a little more room.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

Who knows, but I'd be careful, especially when certified mechanics are getting a thumbs down in here. Maybe I was a bit off in my first answer, but if the MECHANICS in here are getting negative responses, be afraid, be VERY afraid.
Yes, the oil pan is UNDER the car, as is the starter motor. Part is also in the steering column, because if it weren't, how would you start the car???? They replaced it on my Cavalier and showed me what they removed. And my mechanic is not dumb by any means.
No offense, but after 4 GMs, I converted to Dodge. GMs are the worst cars out there and their track record should speak for itself. They are one of the hardest cars to work on(as per my father in law, cursing my car on many weekends, who is also a CERTIFIED mechanic(retired) I have had my Dodge for 12 yrs. and I have been driving for 20+ yrs. It took 4 GMs to get me through the first 10 yrs of driving.

There is no way to get the oil pan off unless the starter motor is taken off unless you have the whole motor out of the car. There is just not enough room without it off as the trans gets in the way. Good luck.

Dude, if you need to remove the starter, it's not the oil pan you're trying to take off.
