Unfortunately, yes, it is normal.

BT Home Hubs are very poorly and cheaply made. Hence, many of them don't work properly. You may have to get BT to swap it 2 or 3 times, 'til you get one that works, I'm afraid.

The BT Home Hub is an excellent bit of hardware made by Thomson S. A. and is in fact a clone of the Thomson 7G VoIP gateway.

HOWEVER BT being BT has scraped the Excellent Thomson firmware and installed there own crappy glitch & bug version. so the hub can be locked down for use with BT internet ONLY.

As a matter of course I restart my home hub every day and do a factory reset one a week. This keeps it going as well as can be expected.

Mine is always doing it. sometimes three or four times in an evening. i agree with everyone about india. it is about time that bt took everyone's complaints on board and (1) did something about the home hub and (2) bring the call centres back to g.b. some chance i suppose as it is cheap to keep them abroad. lol
