First use a flea dip or Frontline from your vet for your pets so the fleas don't have a host to feed on.
Then sprinkle 20 Mule Team Borax laundry powder (contains boric acid) over your carpets, furniture, beds, etc., wait 30 minutes and vacuum...it will kill the fleas and is safe for you, kids and pets. Do it again every other day for larva growing to adult, (it takes 7-10 days for flea larva to grow to adult) Be sure to dispose of vacuum bag each time. Wash bedding, towels, fabric's etc.
For your yard, put 2 tablespoons liquid dish soap into a spray bottle and fill with water and spray your yard which drowns the fleas
or use liquid garlic spray, available at garden centers and hardware stores, it's a natural and safe repellent used for fleas and many other pests, you attach the bottle to your garden hose and spray your yard.
or buy online

I used a mixture of baking soda and iodized salt both available at the wholesale club for under $10.. I sprinkled my carpets and left it on... If you can leave on overnight.. *Get a cheapie dog flea collar and keep it in the canister or put moth balls in the bag.. The bs smothers the live fleas/larve and the salt punctures the eggs... ! Also the bs deodorizes and the salt will pick up any loose dirt in the carpet fibers so it does double duty... You'll see the bs/salt will turn grey from dirt... !
I also discharged several foggers/bombs the day after that will kill any living fleas... I prefer RAID although ORTHO did give me a refund after 2 bombs did not discharge properly. A fleas lifecycle is about 2 weeks so you may have to do this a couple times to get rid of them all. .Also, don't forget the basement... I did a GREAT job of discharging the bombs on the first level and DID NOT do the basement and the fleas "fled" down there.. ! I also used my dog as bait since she had NOT be treated with her flea drops. I let her loose in the house for acouple days brushed her and gave her a bath.. Put the drops on her and I haven't had any fleas since.. Incidently, I use the ZODIAC flea/tick drops from PETSMART.. I have woods in the back of my house and a large breed dog.. .I've had no problems and the ZODIAC are a lot less than the frontline.. For a 4 month supply it cost roughly $11.... You can spot check for fleas using the "light" method. Get a shallow light colored dish put about 1/2 inch of water in it and shine a desk type light.. Any fleas will "go into the light" and drown... Also, not use flea n tick shampoo and drops at the same time on your pet.. REMEMBER it's poison and could make your dog sick... Any soap will kill fleas.. I use dishsoap just be careful of the eyes/ears.. Just leave it on for about 5-10 minutes... Good luck

Dawn dishwashing soap will kill the fleas on your pet, and then the salt in the carpet area will kill them there, but you need to empty your vacuum cleaner bag and throw it away every time you vacuum and you need to do it often to get the eggs up until they are all gone.
There is a good shampoo that is also a safe and natural one that repels fleas and insects for a while. It is called minksheen shampoo and is available at this site: http://www.touchofmink.com/
MinkSheen Pet Shampoo's rich lather will gently clean your pet without leaving it's skin dry or irritated. Mink Oil leaves a soft, shiny, "show" quality coat, while Vitamin E soothes and prevents "hot spots". The Cedar and Citronella oils will naturally repel fleas and ticks while leaving your pet smelling great for days! The added benefit of an anti-bacterial will protect both you and your pet from the spread of harmful germs and bacteria.
We have a liver compromised pet and should not use chemicals on her, and our group uses this shampoo and it seems to work well. You might want to try it.

Unfortunately fleas are very persistent and adaptable. You are right to avoid over-the-counter flea products, like Hartz, but veterinary-endorsed products like Frontline and Revolution are very safe and very effective. One application of Frontline or Revolution will kill all the adult fleas on your pet, plus the nymph and larvae stages of growth and will protect your pet for an entire month. Just using a good topical product goes a long way towards solving the problem in your house too so you many not even need to use a flea bomb or area treatment as long as you treat all your pets consistently.
P.S. I know someone here will tell you to feed powedered garlic with your pet's food to get rid of fleas - don't do it! It doesn't work and it's dangerous for the pet!

Just use Advantage on all the pets monthly for three months and the fleas will be gone without all the hassle. The natural products have less than good results. Fleas can cause anemia dn tapeworms. If you are willing to do trial and error on a bunch or natural remedies at the pets expense, go ahead. Generally, people who wnat to avoid things like Advantage and Frontline are just cheap and are looking for a cheap remedy...not really something natural.

It's a bad year for fleas - my dog is always Frontlined too and this year it didn't do a thing. Buy a special flea comb and acutally "comb" the fleas out of her by hand. Keep a small bowl 1/2 filled with cooking oil and drop the live fleas (dog hair and all) into the oil and they will die immediatley. Also, be sure to comb out all the little black "flea dirt" because much of this is eggs. I do this at least a few times a week and it really helps.

The safest and cheapest method of getting rid of fleas is to use a mixture of boric acid and salt. The powder should be sprayed on carpets, bedding and areas frequented by pets. More information on getting rid of fleas is available at http://pests.in/fleas.html

We used Damascus earth on the carpet and pennyroyle soaps on the cats when I was young. Vacuuming a lot (at least once a day) helps too, make sure to throw the contents away outside the house - eggs can still hatch.
