OK, I am using incoming studies each day to make up lessons. Then I save to folder and then I archive because if I don't archive it all gets deleted. Does that large amount of archived email have to stay there forever ?

Technically Gmail doesn't have folders like traditional email. When you put Gmail into a 'folder' you are really just adding a tag to it. They call it a 'label'. So all of your archived mail is in one folder, but they all have different labels. If you delete your archived mail, you are deleting the mail in your 'folders' because they are the same thing. It's a little confusing at first, but after you use it a while you get the hang of it. But with Gmail you have such a large storage (almost 3GB and growing) you really don't have to delete much.
