my gran swore by putting a dolop (ok a bit then) of butter from the fridge on any black eyes or bangs to the head. It worked too!! alas mainly becuase it was cold that the swelling stopped. Some times it was worth the ridicule from freinds and neighbours. Yes I was often sent...sent I say ouot to play with....aye ok with a dolop o` butter on ma nogin. It was the same in winter (I cant stand the snow ) but the door would go an` my mum would wrap me up like the mitchelin man and send me out in the freezing cold snow. And when I got home soaking freezing and disgusted as to how my mum could do this. "did you have a good time?" I had hypothermia for goodness sake...... were oh were is this going? well my grandad used to give us small drink of mead before going to bed, he said it would give us a good nights sleep.......of course we did,we were a little, just a scansen of a smidgeon tipsy :)

Actually most old wifes tales are blatantly false, except the maggot one and not sure that is a "old wifes tale".

For example, wet feet or cold will give you a cold. Another good false one is that reading or looking at a screen in the dark will strain your eyes.

A spoonful of horseradish to clear a cold. I've been through the teargas chamber in the military, and I still believe that the horseradish treatment is worse. It works though, cleans your sinuses right out. It's kinda gross, but everything that is plugging up your head evacuates in a hurry. :)
