I agree that we have to learn from history. Our most serious problem right now is fighting the slide into fascism that has been perpetrated under the Bush administration. The Nazis turned a democratic country into a totalitarian regime under the guise of fighting communism. Then they were fighting the trade unionists, the liberals, the Jews, the homosexuals, the pacifists, and the list just went on and on.
In this country, each major constitutional freedom has been undermined under the guise of fighting terrorism. Our tax money is being diverted to make the war profiteering companies very rich.
The American people have gained absolutely nothing, except more terrorists, less security and much more debt. “Free corn” isn’t even an issue because the taxpayers pay for the corn just as we pay for the bombs and military weapons that are manufactured and used in our name.
I don’t know what European countries you are referring to as “communist” but several European countries have very high standards of living, less wealth disparity, better quality of life including longevity and they enjoy even more civil rights freedom than we do.
We’ve rejected unfettered capitalism because it didn’t work very well for most people and we are rejecting the current slide into fascism because it is against basic American principles. We can achieve a decent system that combines capitalism as the innovative basis of our economy and social programs that benefit Americans, and still preserves our basic constitutional rights. We can’t do anything if we live in fear and act like ignorant, purposely blind, obtuse, propaganda-fed sheep.

Corn growers have gotten subsidies from the government for years. In fact Bush has increased the subsidies, particularly to corporate farms. It is a form of corporate welfare. So while corn is not exactly free, it is cheap.
There's no trend toward "socialism," which is government control and ownership of business. If you're equating social and welfare benefits with a "socialistic system" these benefits have been consistently cut since the 1980's. One major exception and the largest give-away ever, the prescription drug benefit devised by George W. Bush and passed by the Republican dominated Congress.
Now that we have 47 million Americans without health insurance, there is a call for national health care of some kind. Why? The free market has taken away people's insurance. This is an instance where the free market has not worked.
Consider whether we need a system which a hybrid of various ideologies and ideas. Laissez-faire capitalism cannot be the perfect cure-all when we have so many people who cannot afford to see a doctor.

Socialism - stable on Paper, no longer in actuality... An economics professor at Texas Tech reported he had failed very few scholars yet had, as quickly as, failed an entire type. That type had insisted that socialism worked and that no person could be poor and no person could be wealthy, a large equalizer. The professor then reported, "ok, we would have an test in this form on socialism." "All grades would be averaged and all of us might get carry of the comparable grade which ability, needless to say, no person will get carry of an A." all of them agreed to this. After the 1st attempt the grades have been averaged and all of us have been given a C. the scholars who studied tense have been dissatisfied and the scholars who studied little have been happy. yet, because of the fact the 2d attempt rolled around, the scholars who studied little had studied even much less and people who studied tense desperate they needed a loose journey too, so they studied little. the 2d attempt widespread replaced right into a D! no person replaced into happy. while the third attempt rolled around the common replaced into an F. The scores on no account greater as bickering, blame and contact calling all resulted in tense thoughts and no person might learn for the income of all of us else. To their large dismay the professor failed all of them. Then he despatched all of them this be conscious: "A socialistic government will additionally finally fail - because of the fact while the advantages is large, the attempt to prevail is large, yet while government takes all the advantages away, no person will attempt or decide for to prevail."

Check out zeitgeistmovie.com and you'll get the story, be sure to watch the whole thing for there are many different segments. Makes you think about things you've never thought possible and then start sorting out the truth all over again! It doesn't look like democracy is working too well in Russia either or is that just our news??? I'd be afraid of Putin.

What a brilliant yet simple article, direct and straight to the point. Far too many Americans have succumbed to relying on the government to take care of them, rather than remain self-reliant, and that is unfortunate since the more dependent Americans become on the Congress, the more demanding Congress will be on our freedoms, and that of course the beginning of the end of a civilization.
The fact also shows clearly that those who want socialism are not going to let me speak out about it, having reported the question for deletion.
Why is it that communists, socialists and Democrats want to take your freedom of speech? Grabbing for peoples rights is dangerous, you never know what you might get your hands on.

It breaks my heart the we Americans are not taught basic economics in school, and kept in ignorance. I had to actually go to my local library and study it on my own 10 years after highschool. As evident on this forum, a frightening amount of my fellow Americans simply do not accept the fact that NOTHING is free. There is no such thing as a handout, and government has no money of its own. It only has what we allow it to take from us. The more we allow it to take, the more control it has over us. What is packaged to us as "handouts and subsidies" is theft and enslavement.

The Who said it best... meet the new boss, same as the old boss. We hold some of our Presidents in the highest regard, whether Democrat or Republican. Hoover and Roosevelt had started this mess we're living in now. Starting with the Federal Reserve and allowing a war machine to dictate our economy, to our modern day search for a boogey man in empty caves in the Middle East. Bush is no different than Clinton.. You call it communism or socialism..but the end result is to have the populace living in submission. This is the agenda of our current administration and all future administrations, whether Democrat or Republican. Their objectives are clear:
Create a New World Order.. Enforce the Real ID act complete with radio frequency identification (RFID) chips....Open borders with Mexico and Canada.. Commence the North American Union.. Establish the Amero...Centralized World Banking.. Continue the War in Iraq to redistribute wealth back to the wealthy...look for the boogey man in empty caves ..have the media distract you and entertain you so you don't notice what is going on... dominate the world

It seems to me that the right has been chipping away at constitutional freedoms as hard as they can go lately. That's like the pot calling the kettle black. Only thing is the right do it to advance the wealthiest and the left do it for the middle class and the poor who represent the larger portion of this country.......and no it's not free corn. Sure it comes out of taxpayers money but what better way to spend it. On wars in sovereign nations? This is a pitiful analogy. Last time I checked it was still We The People not We The Richest People.

Yes, you are exactly right. Most people know very little of the horror of socialism and plenty about the Utopian dreams. They are taught that Capitalism causes unequal distribution of wealth and socialism produces equal distribution of wealth. What they don't know is that in reality, socialism lowers everyone to the lowest of all living standards and then equalizes the poverty. Everyone is equally miserable. You own nothing, you have no privacy, you have no liberty, even your children belong to the state, not to you. They really need to learn the reality of socialism not the theory.
