Why do people have Zs coming out of their mouths when they sleep in cartoons?

In Germany in 1427 the first officially recognized 'comic' was produced: in it a boy claims to be unimpressed by the alphabet, claiming if given the chance he could produce more combinations of letters and thus make more words. His own mother (!) then challenges him to do just this, and so the boy sets about step one of his plan: eating the alphabet. He is cocky from A through to P,but then his appetite wanes,and he struggles to finish the rest of the alphabet. As he swallows the Z he immediately falls into a deep slumber,never to awake again, and so as to remind everyone what a foolish notion taking on the alphabet is, the Zs leap out of his mouth on display forever more.

However,because this was the first cartoon ever made, lazy label manufacturers had nothing to rip-off,and,upon seeing the final image of the boy with Z's protruding from his mouth, the chaps at "Schuster und Glenewinkel" sleeping aid tablets chose him for their bottle, influencing every other cartoonist since.

It's mean't to be an onomatapaeic representation of the sound of a snore. I'd personally spell it CccchhhnnnnnnnrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRR myself.
