Is it a recent phenomenon or has it always been like this?

Any way you cut it, my friend, in the end we are all Universally Irrelevant (and in fact, in the grand time-like Universal scheme of things, ALREADY forgotten). So I say, we might as well try to be authentic and true to our nature; whatever the heck that happens to be (and hopefully without stepping on too many little toes in the process). ... When it comes to fabricating Self-conscious Substances, EVOLUTION seems to be getting its way (tricking and/or treating), but in the end The Universe is much more patient than even Evolution Itself. ... For now, we may exercise our illusionary Free Will and look for Meaning in all the nicks and crannies of this little slice of spacetime; especially, if we're so bent on fooling ourselves into thinking that LIFE (as we live it Here and Now) is its own Ultimate Purpose. ... The rest my friend is the politics of the human experience, written in the ephemeral language of our fresh footprints on a sandy beach somewhere. Have Fun!

There is NO necessity for someone to have a crooked mind to be able to read the real intentions of other people. So the answer for me is no. In fact, not all "crooked-minded" people are able to read other people's intentions. They're just crooked but not in any way wise enough to have an ounce of foresight. Sort of a dumb villain.

What we need to read other people's intentions is not a "crooked-mind" nor goodwill. Reading other people's minds takes putting one's own experience to use, and not all people who had experience with "crooked" people end up becoming crooked themselves. A WARNING though: no matter how evil or sinister you are, no matter how impossibly kind-hearted you are, you can never know what's cooking in the other guy's pot.

A crooked mind would not read the real intentions behind a persons actions.
A crooked mind would only show your own self.

What is needed to see what is behind the action is open heart, open hand and open face.
What is happening now in this time is a resurgence of light, which is always balanced by a resurgence of dark.

It is all an illusion, don't sweat the small stuff.

Not always, but sometimes it's practical. Forinstance, if you want to catch a serial killer, you might not want to hire another srial killer to do the investigation. However, studies of serial killers may prove beneficial to law enforcement for finding a serial killer. But, if you want to prevent cyber-crimes such as hacking, you might want to hire someone who can actually crack into another computer system to help protect your network. Is that always a good idea? No. But it may be the only solution in some cases. You don't always need a crooked mind to read the intentions of others, but you might want to think crooked to catch a crook, or talk to a former crook to get ideas. In real life, that's sometimes the best approach.

Recent phenomenon and no it has not always been like this.
Crooked mind produces a person always thinking that everyone else is dishonest. They never trust anyone or anything. They are always thinking the worst and thinking evil thoughts about others. They continually produce dishonesty.

We are to think on the good things in life and think good thoughts. Whatever is honest, whatever is good and whatever is of good report. It produces a more abundant and joyful life with less illnesses.

There is a wonderful thing about the Holy Spirit, there are many things but one in particular, and that is He discerns the hearts of other people and makes you aware.

A BIG NOOOOO!!!!

We are never better off with crookedness for any reason whether it is to read intentions behind actions of other people or to achieve our own personal goals.

Straight forwardness pays in long run and it keeps us away from guilty feelings. Intentions of other people can be read by their own actions or the way they behave. Crookedness for crookedness, blood for blood .... these are not the solutions.
Every problem has a solution with in the accepted rules of philosophy or legal frame work.

Outsmarting each other.

Pretty much the point of human existence.

Better off? Sure. Intellectual competition has made us smarter as per Darwin.

Recent? Oh hell no. One of those 'since time began' things. Intellectual competition is more recent than competition in general, but we're still talking millions of years here.

And it ain't just us. Take a good look at nature and see how often trickery is employed.

Its not a crooked mine small its a common sense mind to see what people are truly up to............the truth can always be found with time and effort and perseverance about another :))) You need not stoop down to lower levels of soul extistence to see the true intentions of another they eventually come out over time people ususally hang themselves with their own doing just have patience to see their evil and as you put it crooked ways.........I have observed this from time to time with others over my life time :))

No. It simply requires interpersonal intelligence, which is based on interoception. It is a peculiar and particular gift.

But, to stop encountering "crooked people?" Change your mind and stop believing they are an inevitable part of your life. Cause and effect are never separated.
